Why Ted Cruz won't slam Donald Trump
CNN ^ | 12/8/15 | Ted Schiefler

Posted on 12/08/2015 5:38:37 PM PST by VinL

Donald Trump's inflammatory rhetoric has invited the scorn of nearly every Republican presidential candidate with one notable exception: Ted Cruz.

As every GOP White House hopeful raced on Tuesday to issue harsh condemnations of Trump's plan to forbid Muslim immigration to the United States, Cruz made significant news by barely saying much at all. He disagreed with Trump — that's it.

"I do not agree with his proposals. I do not think it is the right solution," Cruz said in the Capitol. "The right solution I believe is the legislation that I have introduced."

This was only the second time that Cruz has created any distance between himself and Trump, who have pulled away from most of the pack in Iowa, where the two of them lead in polls. In a pair of new polls released Monday, Cruz and Trump alternated in the top position.

But Cruz's campaign has wagered that attacking Trump — who has shown tremendous political durability through all of his controversies — is a fool's errand, more likely to sink Cruz's numbers than Trump's.

So for six months, Cruz has bashed reporters for trying to bait him into shots into a conflict with the New Yorker, casting the media — and not Trump — as his foil. Even when asked for policy differences with Trump — which Cruz has said are at the heart of the political campaign — the Texas senator would not miss a beat before chastising reporters or encouraging "Republican-on-Republican violence."

It's a gambit that ...

"But in the meantime, Cruzworld is more ebullient than ever before. "

Of course they're ebullient, Cruz has a plan, it's coming together, and it has ZIPPO to do with the Donald.

Today, everyone was hyperventilating-- for Cruz, day at the beach.

Even on FR, some Cruz supporters jumped ship-- little water, and it was over the side. What a shame.

Nah- Cruz said he wasn’t interested in VP. But, Cruz did offer Trump a place in the administration...trade negotiator, wall builder— I think an ideal press secretary - or- doorman at the wall with the HUGE door.

Hard to believe anyone who has followed Cruz would actually jump ship.

Says a lot that so many have difficulty understanding that Cruz is keeping his word and still be running for president.

Cruz will make an excellent president because of it.

I posted this on an earlier thread about Ted’s policy disagreement with Trump’s proposal. I actually got a few responses that acknowledged that there doesn’t seem to be any allowance for any form of policy difference:

I’m probably going to get bashed for this (great opener, huh?) but here goes:

I disagree with people who are saying that they “liked Cruz until now, but this changes everything” and words to that effect. I realize how important the issue of Muslim immigration and/or refugees is to our security. I’m not saying Trump is wrong and Cruz is right. But isn’t there any room for discussion at all? Could Trump’s plan be overkill, sort of like the way the TSA treats everyone as a terrorist at the airport checkpoints? We can’t distinguish any Muslim who is not a threat? Again, I’m not attacking anyone’s position, but, less than 24 hours after Trump announced a very bold proposal, everyone here is already in perfect lockstep and ready to dump Cruz for not getting on the bandwagon?

Let’s say for the sake of discussion that I accept that Cruz is wrong. Even so, I’m not going to dump him as a candidate because he is wrong on one policy question. It’s not like he’s taking a completely idiotic liberal position of letting ‘em all come in and shouting racist at the opposition.

Please, I’d like to hear some reasoned argument.

The media is desperate to get Ted and Donald to dirty each other up so Rubio can slide in.
Neither is foolish enough to go for it.

Cruz did miss a chance to get a leg up on Trump’s ‘moratorium’, but it wasn’t a biggie.
He’s got to think about appealing to moderates now and that limits his options.

What’s the wording of Cruz’s legislation?
If in the story, I apologize. Can’t get it to load.

Cruz respects Reagan’s 8th Commandment. Or possibly, allows Trump to make the bombastic first offer, then follows up with his own “sensible” counter-offer.

Keep repeating that to yourself. It won't make it more true though lol.

Because Ted's running for VP.

Oh yeah! These are perilous times. On one front we've got radical islam operating right here in the U.S. On another front, Hillary is advancing towards the presidency.

It's time for a national unity ticket! Trump/Cruz works for me.

That is strange. You would think Cruz voters would know he voted yes on Rand Paul’s bill which included most Muslim countries and even North Korea and Russia. Not to mention the several pieces of legislation he is introducing.

Everyone is understandably pretty worked up right now. Maybe that explains it. Or maybe Cruz folks aren’t as informed as I assumed.
