Often, a leading candidate dominates one of the Republican Party's subgroups, such as social conservatives or budget hawks. But Mr. Trump is seen as an acceptable choice among many types of Republicans.
"He's cutting across" many Republican segments, said GOP strategist David Winston.
The main quality that unites his supporters is "attitudinal," said Mr. Winston, who advises the House and Senate leadership. Like a majority of Americans, Trump supporters think the nation has gone off track, but they are among the most frustrated that politicians are unable to find a solution.
"It's opened up an avenue for people who want to hear a candidate say, 'I want to do this, and I'll do it no matter what,'" Mr. Winston said.
*snip*
Mr. Winston said he can't recall a precedent for Mr. Trump's base of support in GOP nominating contests, "but then again, we haven't had 'wrong track' [views] be this bad for this long, or political discourse be this frustrated." The closest possible precedent could be Ross Perot, whose 1990s independent and third-party candidacies were built on calls to balance the budget and stop the outsourcing of U.S. jobs.
At least some of Mr. Trump's support comes from conservative independents and Democrats who say they plan to vote in GOP primaries, and who account for nearly a third of the GOP primary electorate, Journal/NBC polling shows.

ALL OF WHICH is opening people’s eyes thanks to Trump! He just keeps on gaining ground like the little train that said, “I CAN!”
"If people can just pour into the country illegally, you don't have a country.." Donald Trump
I’m blue collar and I support trump 100%
They used to be called Reagan Democrats. They’ll be known as Trump Democrats for the next 35 years.

By elimination I have reached the position where it is either Trump or Cruz. I would never vote for Rubio, Bush, Kasich, Paul Christie or Fiorina. Thus I’m left with the two aforementioned. I’m not wild about Cruz but could vote for him if he becomes the nominee.
Another poster wrote....”Trump is like crystal meth, you know you’re going to lose everything but you just can’t stop.”....he is addicting....the media evidences this.
Actually, it’s not Republcans....the article notes that about 30% of “GOP” primary voters are Dems and the Dems plan to vote for Trump. In other words, they don’t care about the GOP platform, which is why Trump obviously feels that he doesn’t have to bother about adhering to it.
He’s a complete populist candidate, that is, stoking (legitimate, in this case) grievances and offering vague and meaningless promises to address them. But we haven’t had a populist candidate since Ross Perot. Actually, Obama used the populist playbook, stoking a cult of personality and making meaningless promises to a group that felt themselves marginalized (although blacks have donated the political conversation in the US for 50 years now), but he was actually adhering to his party’s platform and was supported by them.
Th author’s observation that most in the GOP are ignoring the voting bloc that Trump, an entertainer with a nose for audience, was able to identify interesting. Will others in the GOP go after the white (particularly male) working class vote? I don’t know.

The term blue collar used to mean unions. Today it means tax paying Americans.
Actually REAGAN was the last "populist" (by your use of the term) candidate. He offered very few specifics, and instead focused entirely on two big issues, restore the economy (the most specific he usually got was "tax cuts"---exactly what Trump says---and "Gid rid of regulations" without saying which) and rebuild America's military (again with no specifics). It is the way visionary leaders align public support.
Name one candidate since Reagan that gave a cr@p about the platform. I recall Bob Dole saying no one ever reads that thing when they asked him about the abortion plank.
