In the feudal era there were the "three estates" -- the clergy, the nobility and the commons. The first and second were eradicated in Robespierre's Revolution.
But in the 18th and 19th century, Edmund Burke and Thomas Carlyle identified what the latter called a "stupendous Fourth Estate."
Wrote William Thackeray: "Of the Corporation of the Goosequill -- of the Press ... of the fourth estate. ... There she is -- the great engine -- she never sleeps. They are your enemy as a conservative and should be treated as such.
The cheapest shot (and I see it every day) against Trump is to publish a photo with his mouth open. Completely easy way to make ANY candidate look bad and they do it non-stop with him.
Trump has exposed what little confidence the American public has in the media these days.
Look at CNN and ABC online this morning. Both are completely perplexed as to the cause of the shooting in California. It's purposeful deceit and the public has wised up to the b.s.

Very educational article.
First for its historical explanation of “estates of the realm.”
Importantly, for its expose’ of the current disgraced condition of the “fourth estate,” the Media (nee Press).
A simple rule will suffice. Whomever the media likes is evil. Whomever that attack is good. This rule will virtually never fail you.
That’s “they attack”, seruzawa you idiot!

Nixon and Agnew were attacked for not understanding the First Amendment freedom of the press. But all they were doing was using their First Amendment freedom of speech to raise doubts about the objectivity, reliability and truthfulness of the adversary press.IMHO the fact that journalists all continually “meet together,” virtually, via the AP newswire explains perfectly the fact that their “conversation ends in a conspiracy against the public,” just as Adam Smith predicted.Since those days, conservatives have attacked the mainstream media attacking them. And four decades of this endless warfare has stripped the press of its pious pretense to neutrality.
