High military court will hear case of Marine punished for displaying Bible verse

The highest U.S. military court will hear the case of a Marine who was punished for refusing to remove a Bible verse from her workstation.

In May, 2013 then-Lance Cpl. Monifa Sterling kept a Bible verse on her computer in three places. The verses read "No weapon formed against me shall prosper," a modification of the Isaiah 54:17, according to the Catholic News Agency.

Ms. Sterling's staff sergeant demanded she remove the verse, but Ms. Sterling refused, saying she had the right to express her religious freedom.

The next day Ms. Sterling arrived to find the verses had been ripped down from her station. She put them up again. The cycle repeated until Ms. Sterling was court-martialed on Feb. 1, 2014.

She was convicted of disrespecting a superior commissioned officer, failing to go to an appointed place of duty, and disobeying a lawful order on four separate occasions, The Daily Caller reported.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals also sided against Ms. Sterling, saying significant damage could be caused by forcing military employees to be exposed to a religious quotation, CNA reported.

“Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them.” (1 John 3:15)

Do not let a “root of bitterness” spring up in your heart (Hebrews 12:15)

No bitterness. But in truth - I’ve met God, and you don’t remind me of Him.

I don’t want to get in the Holy Spirit’s way in admonishing you two, but I gotta admit it’s tempting.

Feel free to speak up.

The military has every right to restrict what is posted in the workplace. And I know of no commandment from God requiring the woman to post anything on her computer at work. There is a time and place for everything. But the CO gets to decide what is appropriate at work under his/her command.

I did my BCT shortly after the My Lai “Massacre” become top news.Perhaps for that reason we had a class lasting several hours, conducted by an O-2,which focused on “lawful” and “unlawful” orders.I must admit that I wasn't fully awake through the whole thing (many Freepers understand what I'm sayin’) but the instructor stressed that a soldier is not obliged to obey an “unlawful” order and he went on to give some examples of what might represent such an order.

I seriously wonder if the orders given to this Marine might qualify as such.

“...significant damage could be caused by forcing military employees to be exposed to a religious quotation.” And just how pray tell?

Is this what America has come to? The only "significant damage" will be the damage resulting from Divine judgment against treating Scripture and a child of God as if they were enemies.

Israel hath cast off the thing that is good: the enemy shall pursue him. (Hosea 8:3)

They have set up kings, but not by me: they have made princes, and I knew it not: of their silver and their gold have they made them idols, that they may be cut off. (Hosea 8:4)

I have written to him the great things of my law, but they were counted as a strange [foreign] thing. (Hosea 8:12)

I think she will lose. Would you support the right of a Satan Worshipper to have a verse on their computer station that read “Satan is King” ? Or How about a Muslim that had one from the Koran that commanded them to kill Jews and Christians?

No, and the latter is not the same things as typical Bible verses (unless the Philistines are upon us), but the issue here is whether the military allows expressions of faith in such places, as well as the reality that the gov. cannot separate itself from religion. \

For religious beliefs of the founders, which indirectly at least influenced their ideology, are reflected in the fundamental laws of America, are are the overall religious views of Americans in electing law makers and (indirectly) interpreters of its laws.

And as the Founders exampled, those in government may express religious faith in its laws, statements, and actions, which, in the light of its historicity in America, in effect extol and favor Christianity over other faiths. It cannot however, require belief, nor otherwise act as a theocracy, including punishing others merely for holding and expressing religious beliefs (except in certain places if it manifestly incites proactive unlawful actions, like your examples) but which enforced secularism ends up doing.

As neither Satanism or Islam certainly cannot claim the implicit influence and sanction the Founders overall gave to Christianity, it should not expect equal affirmation with Christianity. And as Satanism and Islam easily equates to being contrary to American values, I can see how the Founders would not allow it openly expressed in the military. But when some Bible verses are declared risk doing significant damage then we know that the Constitution is not being interpreted as the Founders intended it, and as great leaders exampled.

I suppose everything from a picture of Washington praying to FDR's D-Day Prayer can also risk "significant damage."

Good night.

She will likely lose. The military is no longer an organization for defense of our country and culture, but a place for social experimentation.

Remember what the politicians have promoted and allowed next time you think about voting.

Voting is complicity.

Well their errors might be cease to be dangerous by being exposed to information that contradicts them.

We can’t have THAT in Comrade Flex-O-Bumble’s errant experiment in social engineering!

IS sees this as a victory for them. The soldiers in the US military are so weak they can be seriously harmed by a bible verse! Yep this only empowers IS.

Perhaps if it was written in Aramaic script nobody would have said anything.

Or maybe from the Koran.

She did not face a court martial simply over posting the Bible verse but over her refusal to follow orders on several other occasions not related to religion.

And she put up not 1 copy, not 2 copies but 3 copies of the exact same quote - "No weapon formed against me shall prosper" -- in 28-point type on her computer's tower, her monitor and her desk, a computer and desk she shared with others.

And she wasn't even quoting it correctly: "No weapon that is formed against thee (or you) shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord."

Sterling told military officials that the posted passage helped her summon patience when dealing with short-tempered Marines who were frustrated with their CAC problems.

One could see it as her posting the "No weapon formed against me shall prosper" quote as an admonishment not to give her any sort of guff or complain too much which might be why "A military judge determined that the quotations, "could be interpreted as combative ... [and] could easily be seen as contrary to good order and discipline," court records show." Not because they were religious, even if that was the reason that her CO objected, but because it was seen as being antagonistic toward those she was there to help and antagonistic toward command.

http://www.military.com/daily-news/2015/10/30/bible-citing-marine-raises-religious-freedom-questions-in-appeal.html

At the time, a military court subsequently noted, Sterling was "locked in an antagonistic relationship with her superiors" that extended beyond the dispute with over the biblical phrases, and she faced several charges of disobeying orders.

Monifa refused to wear as ordered by a different officer, a class C uniform claiming a medical exemption for a hip injury (a medical chit) that had a handwritten note on that said wearing a class C uniform could be "difficult" but was not explicitly excused from wearing one; she then refused to report to gate duty when ordered claiming "stress reaction" and that she believed her medical chit which recommended "light duty" exempted her from standing; another time she refused another order to report for gate duty, this time by a Major, citing that a migraine medication she was on would cause dizziness and drowsiness but then admitted during her court martial that while she usually took the medication as prescribed, at night before going to bed, on the day she refused to obey that order to report to gate duty, she'd taken the medication later in the morning so as that a migraine wouldn't interfere with her attending church services earlier that day.

Read the transcript of her 1st appeal here. Monifa had a problem with following orders of superior officers and was deservedly discharged from the Marines.

https://www.courtlistener.com/opinion/2784127/united-states-v-sterling/

Reading the transcript, it seemed there were other incidents of not obeying orders beyond what was in her court martial that she had gotten away with in the past as it was noted that her fellow Marines had started to resent it and or referenced her actions and her lack of being disciplined when they were subject to orders or duties they didn't like - she'd become by her actions, a morale problem and contrary to good order and discipline.

The muslim would not be watched. It would hurt the diversity of our modern military.

Nadil Hassan had already repeatedly lashed out at non-muslims and made death threats against them and was given a pass. Even when he was known to be communicating with Al Qaeda online.
