You’re not serious, right? “Violating airspace” is grounds for destroying an aircraft and killing its crew?

Not really: there are several hundred steps including diplomatic protests, fighter escorts, raising the issue to international courts, and more before you turn to destroying stuff.

That’s known as “an act of war”.

It didn’t start just now. It was already at the stage of Turkey calling Russian Ambassador to answer about the frequent airspace violations in the beginning of October - http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/oct/06/nato-chief-jens-stoltenberg-russia-turkish-airspace-violations-syria

agreed. There was no cause for this unless you assume that NATO is more interested in getting rid of Assad than ISIS. it was an act of war by a NATO member against Russia which is a pretty big effing deal. I think this probably marks the lowest point in US/Russian relations ever-Cuban missile crisis period included.
