President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday ordered state-of-the art air defense missile systems to be deployed at a Russian air base in Syria following the downing of one of its warplanes by Turkey, a move that raised the threat of a military confrontation between the NATO member and Moscow.
The S-400 missile systems will be sent to the Hemeimeem air base in Syria's coastal province of Latakia, located about 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of the border with Turkey. The systems are capable of targeting Turkish jets with deadly precision. If Russia shot down a Turkish plane, NATO would be required to intervene.
Turkey shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber on Tuesday, saying it crossed into its airspace from Syria despite repeated warnings. One of its two pilots was killed by militants after bailing out, while his crewmate was rescued by Syrian army commandos and delivered in good condition to the Russian base early Wednesday.

I wonder if Vlad will target US aircraft in Syria.
How did we get wrapped up in a WWW3 standoff...over ‘moderate rebels’?
I’d still like the left to ‘splain to me what our national interest is in deposing Assad.
If NATO requires all the member states - including US - to go to war on behalf of any member no matter how stupidly or illegally it is behaving, then the terms of NATO need to be drastically rewritten. Or we need to get out
Obama has been INTENTIONALLY weak on ISIS in order that Russia have the opportunity to step in, do the job (supposedly), then set up permanent base there in the resource rich Middle East, which they will clearly use to their strategic advantage when they later return more seriously to their efforts to retake the former Soviet states in Eastern Europe.
The Russians have also been working more closely than ever with the increasingly dangerous and threatening ChiComs, conducting annual war games with them in obvious preparation for war with the US and its NATO allies.
You disingenuous phony blankity blank. I've said all along that Obama is working together with Putin to see the demise of the US and rise of the Soviet Union 2.
What is the national interest of the US taxpayer in going to war over some border incursions in Muslim Turkey. Unless you a McCain type who loves any excuse for a war, and doesn’t mind borrowing from China to pay for it, the answer is None
However, at this point I must take the side of those who are fighting (radical) islam, not those whose sympathies are somewhat in doubt.
Wise people know their strength and their weakness. Washington is, alas, full of fools.
“...NATO cannot be expected to be impartial in a dispute being one of its member states and Russia.”

Ahh...Islamist Turkey needs to be expelled from NATO. Turkey and its Islamist president have been financially supporting ISIS by buying its stolen oil at below-market prices and defending ISIS militarily by bombing the Kurds who are effectively battling ISIS.
IMHO Erdogan has dreams of resurrecting the Ottoman empire with himself as Caliph.
Obama has been weak on ISIS because he wants to oust Assad, the way he ousted Gaddafi. Obama loves to create chaos in Middle Eastern countries. He hates Putin because Russia is trying to prevent a repeat of what we did in Lybia. Putin said exactly that , last month at the UN. He said sane people had had enough of these destructive regime-changes, and Russia was going to make sure it doesn’t happen in Syria
Obama and Russia are Not plotting together.
The Russians have been repeatedly and deliberately violating Turkish airspace, and ignoring warnings. The Russians were doing this to intimidate the Turks. "We will violate your airspace at will and you will not do anything about it." The Turks did not comply. Whether or not they had U.S. clearance, I certainly do not know. I doubt Obama would have agreed. The Russians are defending Assad. The Turks are defending ethnic Turks (Turkmen) living in Syria. Turkmen are a substantial minority in the southern Caucus and unrest among the Turkmen is something the Russians do not want to deal with.
“What is the national interest”
Simple concept; Don’t violate other countries airspace with impunity. I think Russsia now will respect Turkey’s border. Or are you some sort of Bernie Sanders type who doesn’t believe in having borders?
So we’ve smoked you out as a war lover
Context matters. As Syria's former colonial master, Turkey might have been sizing the country up for an invasion. Does anyone really think Russia is gathering intelligence to invade Turkey during a bombing run against Syrian rebels?
Cheers!
Turkey respects no ones borders. They neighbors hate them all.
Are you in bed with ISIS like your friend Turkey ?
Simple concept; Don’t violate other countries airspace with impunity. I think Russia now will respect Turkey’s border.

So will Turkey now refrain from violating Syrian airspace in its campaign to bomb the Kurds who are effectively battling ISIS? Or should the Turks be allowed to bomb the Kurds and defend ISIS with impunity?
I hit a nerve, did not I? The truth hurts.
I believe only if it happened in turkish airspace. Nato would have no requirement to intervene if the turkish jet entered syrian airspace and was shot down there. Though the S-400 has the capability to target aircraft well within turkey's borders so who knows what could happen.
Russia has laid down the ante to Erdogan.
Putin hasn’t done anything. Dropped a few dumb bombs on some trucks today after Turkey wasted that Russian aircraft. Wow. Impressive.
Russia got punched in the nose by somebody their size and the only response they have is this psywar clap trap that you are lapping up.
