Following the downing of a Russian jet by the Turkish air force this morning, all eyes are on Turkey.

It should come as no surprise that Turkey was capable of taking out a Russian jet so easily. Turkey's military uses cutting-edge equipment, including some brought in from the US and a surprising amount it builds at home.

Russia isn't going to take on Turkey in any conventional sense. They will likely cut off energy supplies and bomb the Turkmen areas near the Turkish border, but inside Syria. If there were any massive Turkish attack, Russia would likely use nukes to reply, but that is not likely IMO.

Russia won’t mess with Turkey. But they will figure out a way to politically box Turkey in. I am thinking arm the Kurds.

No, they are just going to give the Kurds the entire catalog.

According to this article at zerohedge, Turkey recieves 57% of it's natural gas from Russia. That's a LOT of people/industry in Turkey that could have their power cut. Good graphic here on who is dependent on Russian gas http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-11-24/russia-declares-warplane-downing-hostile-act-will-it-cut-turkish-gas-supplies

They’ll send in their special forces to find out who shot down the jet and deal with them and will tell Turkey to go pound sand.

.

Russia needs the money from natural gas sales ... I suspect that Putin will follow a two-prong approach ...

1) a sting now ...

2) a kick-in-the-ass when the Turks least expect it ...

it’s the KGB way ...

.

Turkey will be an awesome opponent if Russia decides to invade.

Otherwise, I don’t think Russia has too much to worry about.

"No, they are just going to give the Kurds the entire catalog."

That is certainly an option, too. The Kurds need friends and the US has been starving them of any significant weaponry.

yep, the Bear really never left. I’d like to see the real radar. IMHO, I can’t understand at all why Turkey would do this.

Barry says they need to “protect their border from incursion”, yet our own border....

I hope so.

Turkey’s a duplicitous, islamist loving, backstabbing bastard. I hope Russia pounds the crap out of them. And then comes back and gives them some more for the Kurds.

I don’t think Russia would invade but they’ll make a wreck out of their economy.

The Russian peasants kicked Hitlers ass and drove his army back 1,000 miles with not much more than Mosin-Nagant rifles and -40 degree winters.

The modern Russian army is a lot better armed and backed by a nuclear weapon inventory.

I sure wouldn’t place my bets on Turkey if this situation escalates.

the published Russian plane travel plot seems to indicate ground to air attacks against ISIS ... suspect the Turks were trying to distract / stop the Russian attacks ... bad move ... kinda a declaration of war ...

Turkey is a NATO member..

A attack on them is a attack on us all...

That is how it will go, in spite of protests to the contrary..

This Putin love affair is really getting weird.

“Turkey-NATO anniversary - 18 February 1952

“NATO is one of the essential dimensions of Turkish foreign and defence policy. Turkey has been an important member of the Alliance and a reliable Ally for 60 years.”

Ambassador Haydar Berk, Permanent Representative of Turkey to the North Atlantic Council”
