After news broke that a SuperPAC supporting John Kasich is preparing to launch a $2.5 million assault on Donald Trump, the billionaire businessman once again said he's seriously considering a third party bid if he fails to win the Republican nomination.
[TRUMP TWEET]
Earlier this year, the RNC and Trump signed a pledge: Trump promised not to run as an independent candidate if he lost the nomination. In return the Republican National Committee pledged not to launch attacks against him. All he wanted, Trump said, was a level playing field.
And he got one. The RNC hasn't done anything to bring down his poll numbers nor does it plan to do so.
Why then does Trump threaten a third party ticket? SuperPAC's have absolutely nothing to do with the RNC. They are completely independent organizations that can't even coordinate their actions with the Republican Party or individual candidates. The RNC literally has no authority over them. Everything they do, they do on their own accord.
Either Trump isn't familiar with how SuperPAC's operate or he simply doesn't care. His repeated threats to run as an independent candidate prove that he wasn't looking for a level playing field after all, but for an easy, obstacle-free path to the nomination.
That is not what the RNC promised him - nor is it something the RNC can promise. Every candidate can be attacked by SuperPAC's supporting their opponents, and by their rivals themselves. That's par for the course in politics, and Trump knows it.

Donald Trump-———Re-negotiating a contract the other side is breaking.
Whatever takes out the GOPe works for me.
Is all the chaos in the Republican party mere theater designed to elect Hillary? Are we, the electorate, the victims of a monstrous conspiracy? Our “leadership” is so bankrupt that anything is possible.
He knows regardless what the rules say the GOPe is trying to sink him because they know they're outclassed are scared of losing their power.
MISTAKE.
His claim to presidential legitmacy and the allegiance of Americans is too new and too fragile.
If he can’t make it within the established framework... he shouldn’t be running.
I think he CAN make it as a traditional nominee and if he wants to be a third party candidate, that says he’s not confident in himself. It will be a weak move that looks like and IS a mistake. Hang tough Donald!
I don’t get why Trump did not run as an independent from the start.
Sound the death knell for the old, dying left of center GOP!
Call it the Tea Party, or better yet The Oath Keepers!
He should see the commercials against him first.
This guy is not really a Republican.
He shouldn't let himself be intimidated. Threatening a third party run is small and snarky. It plays RIGHT into the Liberal scheme.
I might add, it plays RIGHT into the GOP scheme as well... which is NOT much different than the Liberal one.
Frankly, the story is B.S. Trump made his pledge, and it’s entirely laughable to claim that the GOP is breaking the pledge because a Super-PAC tied to Kasich is preparing to go negative on him.
Most likely, this is in response to some a**hole RNC dude in New Hampshire trying to sue to keep him off the NH ballot.
Or he is making a threat that could influence the outcome in his favor. Making a threat is not breaking the deal.
And who says Trump wanted a level playing field?
Ohio has passed a spoiler law. If a candidate runs for a party’s nomination and fails, Ohio will not place his name on the ballot as an independent. I’m guessing Trump must know this. If not he needs to fire somebody.
Kasich and Bush, neither of which have any chance of winning this thing want to blow at least $2.5M of donations in taking down Trump. Tossing millions of GOP voter donations in the toilet... how very Rove of them.
What’s next? Graham and Pataki going to pool resources to take down Fiorina??
I don’t give to the GOP. I would if I wasn’t convinced that they would spend what little I’ve got on the most outlandish, reprehensible crap imaginable.
Zactly
Better if he engaged someone to run vs. Kasich for Ohio Governor, or any other post he ever seeks .. and same for those who are funding the anti-Trump campaign. He can easily make their lives as miserable as they are trying to make his.
“..Donald Trump-âââRe-negotiating a contract the other side is breaking..”.
Easy to forget that Trump is a very good negotiator and will probably SAY a number of things that “shock” people both in the RNC and the MSM. They are SCARED TO DEATH of him because they do not OWN him. And they know they are the reason that Obama got elected. TWICE...they gave the election to Obama. Owned, and more concerned about their profits and power than they are about America and its freedoms.
Do you remember the farce in 1992 when Perot gave us 8 years of Clinton?
Why doesn’t he just run as a democrat?
