Russia and USSR are not the same thing. Violating airspace with no hostile intent is hardly a reason for being shot down, unless you approve of Breshnev’s shooting down of KAL 007

I didn't support the Soviets in that incident, but I didn't blame them, either. And it's very telling that the U.S. didn't really press the Soviet Union on that one, especially when you consider that the victims of the Flight 007 incident included a sitting U.S. Congressman (Larry McDonald of Georgia).

If you violate another nation's airspace, you do so at your own risk.

This was a stupid move on both Russia and Turky's parts but this was not a passenger jet it was a military aircraft and Russia has been playing with fire over and over doing this to many countries airspace's and has been warned over and over to knock it off. Someone was going to do this eventually. The really stupid thing was downing of the helicopter. I really hope that was the rebels and not Turkey.
