An 8-year-old girl who was behind the wheel of a car — with her grandfather in a passenger seat — was killed Sunday afternoon when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed in Doniphan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the young victim as Cadence Orcutt, of Troy.

According to the patrol’s website, the crash occurred at 4:48 p.m. Sunday at 175th and Peck Road, about 2 miles west of Wathena.

The patrol said Cadence was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt west on 175th when she lost control of the car and overcorrected to the left.

The car then left the roadway and went down an embankment, where it overturned and landed on its top.

Cadence, who the patrol said wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Yes. A 55 year old man was letting his 8-year-old granddaughter drive his car on the road. Just when you think you've heard the dumbest decision an adult can make something like this comes along.

Maybe the car had one of those faulty GM ignition switches that hasn’t been replaced.

The grandfather is a worse piece of crap than the Houston parents tgat had one child that baked the baby in the oven.

Grandpa should spend the rest of his days in prison.

I don’t think he’s gonna get invited to Christmas dinner this year.

I had my granddaughters running the plow truck as soon as they could reach the pedals. They were also shooting the .22 as soon as their arms were long enough to shoulder it. They also were riding dirtbikes when they were 7. This can all be done safely and with the kids learning alll sorts of good lessons and habits at an early age. Of course this is all done on my land so there is that.

If she could reach the pedals, I’d probably start teaching at this age. The more years of experience she has, the better the driver she would be.

But it would be a few years before I would take her on the road in any serious way.

Without a seat belt even! I remember our dad letting us sit on his lap and “steer”. But we only had access to a car when we visited our grandmother out of state. If we had a car all the time he probably wouldn’t have even gotten started with that.

I agree with you. It’s perfectly safe to teach them adult skills, if you are using discernment when it is right to learn them.

I would never teach a child to drive on the highway until they were at least 14, but they can learn basic control of a vehicle earlier than that.

The more years of experience she has, the better the driver she would be.

"Would have been" in this case. She was still 6 years away from minimum age for getting a drivers license. The lessons could have waited.

“Cadence’s mother, Brittany Nicole Orcutt, took to Facebook to speak to those who were commenting on the tragedy.”

“For all the judgmental people saying bad things about me and my parenting skills, there’s one thing you all should know — I am so over protective of my children,” the post read. “I would have absolutely never let my daughter drive on one gravel road.”

Let me give it to you straight, Brittany. You were a bad parent and now your child is dead. Not directly your fault, but you let your daughter with an incompetent fool.

This story just doesn’t pass the “smell” test.

Question 1: How did the Highway Patrol know the child was the one who was driving the car when it crashed?

Question 2: As the grand father was supposedly the only other person in the car, was he the witness who named the child as the driver?

Question 3: Could someone else have been driving the car when the car crashed, rolled over, and killed the child who wasn’t securely seat belted in the car?

Question 4: Could the grandfather be blaming the child for this accident to shield the real driver from criminal charges?

IMHO, there are missing pieces from this story.
