Democrat John Bel Edwards won the runoff election for Louisiana governor Saturday, defeating the once-heavy favorite, Republican David Vitter, and handing the Democrats their first statewide victory since 2008.
Edwards, a state lawmaker, will take over the office from term-limited Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal in January.
Voters' rejection of Vitter was a stunning turn of events for the U.S. senator, who has been a political powerhouse in the state for years and started his campaign nearly two years ago as the race's front-runner.

Translation: Bend over, lots of new taxes coming soon!!
Considering how manipulated voting records are with Mitch and Jonbon/Ryan manipulating votes to Barry’s advantage and by an always miraculous narrow margin, I don’t put supreme trust in them. If you want to trust this POS to do the right thing when the chips are down, I think we already have our answer as to how he will prioritize.
Don’t complain about GOP garbage if you support garbage in the GOP.
jindal refused to reveal who he early voted for. i think jindal quitting the presidential race last week allowed bayou voters to remember why they don’t like jindal. couldn’t jindal quit after the election? the next big fight: expanding medcaid in the bayou state.
Except that I’ve followed Vitter’s record ever since he was a state representative in the mid-90s way before there was such a thing as Majority Leader Mitch, or Speaker Ryan.
He has a consistently conservative voting record. He is one of the most conservative politicians EVER elected in Louisiana.
Period.
Yes, this Edwards is a run-of-the-mill liberal posing as a moderate. He could easily fool voters.
Jindal supported Angelle, who was his Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources.
The Edwards victory is also the death knell of the Confederate monuments in New Orleans. This will cost taxpayers a fortune and insult LA traditions. Voters though are not smart enough to see ahead.
My condolences goes to you. but as for the majority, I hope that he raises the taxes on them 10 fold. Knowing what the Democrat Party represents, then electing one to rule you.
Jindal was also strong on freedom of religion, but he could not convince the legislature to pass a freedom of religion restoration act.
CF called this one.
Final results per LA Sec of State website All 3945 precincts reporting Governor John Bel Edwards (D) 56.11% 646860 David Vitter (R) 43.89% 505929 Lieutenant Governor Melvin L. "Kip" Holden (D) 44.62% 506578 "Billy" Nungesser (R) 55.38% 628864 Attorney General James D. "Buddy" Caldwell (R) 43.70% 473869 "Jeff" Landry (R) 56.30% 610433
Taxes will certainly be raised on the Vitter voters; less so, on the Edwards supporters, and they all know that.
Exactly, Vitter is one of the few Republicans not tied to the Country Clubs. The most conservative legislator in many years. New Attorney General Jeff Landry, a former conservative U.S. representative for one term, is also the most conservative person in that office since probably 1956.
If there was fraud, it was probably confined to New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The returns look right to me. The turnout was low; many “Republicans” sat on their little fannies.
Agreed. Hopefully, Landry will put some sheriffs and other crooked local officials in jail.
Two congressmen, John Fleming and Charles Boustany, both MD’s, will run for Vitter’s seat; either could see their House seat go Democrat too in 2016. The third-placed candidate in 2014, Rob Maness, with the Tea Party, is also expected to run. Scott Angelle is thought to be interested. I wouldn’t be surprised to see HRC coax Mary Landrieu to try for a comeback either.
Bull.
Republicans won all the major statewide races down-ballot except those where Democrats were running unopposed. The Democrats fielded a social conservative West Point grad who served in the 82nd Airborne against a philandering "family values" Republican who paid hookers to make him wear diapers.
You can't run a lousy candidate and then blame voter fraud when he loses.
Vitter wasn't "pure" enough for them. But then no candidate ever seems to meet that requirement for them, do they? There's always, always some flaw that enables them to bitch and moan about "the lesser of two evils."
“A lot of people aren’t into this “lesser of two evils” voting anymore.”
This “lesser of two evils” meme is getting more stupid by the election.
Edwards bragged about his support for Obama. So, I suppose you prefer the greater of two evils.
Republicans better keep a future eye on East Baton Rouge Parish: it is becoming reliably Democrat despite a large number of suburban voters.
