Democrat John Bel Edwards won the runoff election for Louisiana governor Saturday, defeating the once-heavy favorite, Republican David Vitter, and handing the Democrats their first statewide victory since 2008.
Edwards, a state lawmaker, will take over the office from term-limited Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal in January.
Voters' rejection of Vitter was a stunning turn of events for the U.S. senator, who has been a political powerhouse in the state for years and started his campaign nearly two years ago as the race's front-runner.

You have no idea of what you are posting about. Vitter has a rating of 92 from the ACU. By comparison, Edwards has a 30.
Lucky you don’t live here...bet you would have voted Piyush Jindal for Prez.
Stop confusing the ignorant with facts! /sarc.
I’ll tell you why abb, and I voted for Vitter. He votes conservative...like we want him to.
Jindal wrecked this state, and Edward will now incinerate it...I’m crossing the border to TX. Eff Louisiana.
Vitter is not GOPe. You must be a Jindal supporter...
Bossier went Vitter; Caddo, Edwards.
Why the Democrat party even exists in the South is astonishing. If the U.S. didn’t have such an ossified 2 party system, we might see party shifts as In the UK where a party such as the Liberals (early 20th century) could be wiped out in a generation, and the Labor party could be reduced to a rump in an election. You see the same thing in Canada.
If popular will was really in place in the South, you would probably have a very weak Dem party, a declining GOPe, and a rising libertarian/consitutionalist party. Instead we always are given the choice between the less of 2evils.
“Vitter has one of the most conservative voting records in the U. S. Senate, and while he was a state representative, he consistently voted conservative. “
As a party, you don’t run a guy with a credible, admitted prostitution problem. That’s the whole story.
The GOP has maintained control of the state legislature, so unless the GOP controlled legislature caves and goes along, Edwards will have a hard time jacking up any taxes and I'm sure the state GOP is fully aware that they will lose their majorities if they go along with any tax hikes.
Last I checked, a governor cannot raise taxes without the legislature approving
Thanks, but no thanks. Conspiracy theories are just another crutch we use to avoid blame for our mistakes.
I’m so tired of Edwards being tagged a blue dog Democrat. He’s a tax and spend liberal and the folks in Louisiana will soon find out the hard way. The last honest moderate Democrats, in my opinion, were Zell Miller and maybe James Traficant. Any Democrat who is called a moderate or Blue Dog is an illusion.
The Louisiana Legislature is chock full of Tax and Spend Republican RINOs. Jindal raised millions of dollars in taxes last year, and it passed the legislature with votes to spare.
If you’re going to comment about Louisiana politics, at least try and keep up with what actually happens here.
Once again, he won twice statewide after the issue was known.
Sex scandals only hurt Republicans. DemocRats are immune.

“The evidence is telling: the GOP won down-ballot races”
In La, in this election? I can’t find that info
I do not think that a Republican could lose in 2010. I have to think that prostitution problems have to have some effect.
Eliot Spitzer had to resign because of prostitution issues. And, then there was Weiner man. So, it seems to matter in New York.
No doubt it had an effect. But to say he wasn’t “electable” exclusively because of it is BS.

Jindal’s unpopularity didn’t help.
Your from the great state of Louisiana , is it true that the GOP won the down ballot races yesterday? I thought it was just a governors race?
Another possibility is that people were just sick of him after so many years. Even Churchill lost a reelection bid soon after winning WWII. People sometimes want to make a change.
