Donald Trump hated wind farms — until an Iowa voter asked
Washington Post ^ | November 19, 2015 | Philip Bump

Patricia Scalabrini, whose husband works for a local wind turbine manufacturer, wanted to know if Trump supports subsidies for the industry. The company that employs her husband, TPI, moved into a factory that was abandoned when Maytag moved its operations to Mexico. TPI employs about 800 people in Newton.

It is helped by subsidies, in the form of the "production tax credit," which gives energy producers tax breaks based on how many kilowatt-hours of electricity they generate using renewable methods. The PTC has been continually renewed for short periods, meaning that it often becomes a political bargaining chip. It is important to continued rapid expansion of the wind industry, and therefore to the woman's husband's job.

Trump began by saying, "Well, I'm okay with it." (He then said that he "know[s] a lot about wind," prompting some tittering in the audience.) He noted that it can be hard for wind to be competitive in energy production particularly when prices for fossil fuels are so low, so "you need subsidies." (He paused to marvel: "It's an amazing thing when you think -- you know, where they can, out of nowhere, out of the wind, they make energy.")

The moderator pressed him, you're okay with the subsidies? Trump replied, "I'm okay with subsidies, to an extent. I don't like subsidies when you have $19 trillion in debt." That said, he was clearly supportive: "If oil goes up [in price], it's great. But if oil stays low, it's a very tough business."...

Trump, in fact, does know a lot about wind. A few years ago, Donald Trump wanted to build a golf course in Scotland. There was just one problem: The Scottish government had licensed an off-shore wind farm near the course, which Trump worried would ruin the views.

The city of Addison, TX spent 6 million dollars to build a water tower, of which 1.1 million was spent on wind turbines on top of it to power the thing. The put a classrooom in the bottom to teach the kiddies all about wind energy... a classic Liberal boondoggle.

Now they are having to pay $112,000 to remove said turbines due to damage. It seems that they went up there to perform regular maintenance and found they were all shot up. Realizing they were a danger to the populace as they were no longer structurally sound, they had to anchor them down to prevent them from flying off with the wind and decapitating someone.

1.2 million dollars pissed in the wind for a liberal “feel good” project at the taxpayer’s expense.

Invasion? From what I read we had a net zero Mexican population this year.

What invasion? So with upwards of 30,000,000 illegals running though our cities and towns, and hospitals like Dallas Parkland churning out 10,000 anchor babies per year, were now cool?

What invasion? You must live in some isolated hole.

Proudly supporting the US warfighters for 25 years. The Commanders I have worked for actually valued my opinion, so yours isn’t worth spit.

His comment didn’t make a lot of sense to me.

It sounds like he’s saying that oil is cheap and wind can’t compete so let’s subsidize it.

While I don’t have any issues with him having investments, its pretty unseemly to push subsidies in the direction of his investments (if he has them)

thackney does yeoman service with his energy postings. I've learned a few things, and the updates save me from having to do the kind of digging in that area that I'd like to do.

So, we have just two presidential candidates who want to build a wall.

Mr. Cruz has the will, and Mr. Trump has the will and the broader political-business connections.

Not to slight Mr. Cruz, who I'd vote for in a [pardon the pun] New York minute, but I think Mr. Trump would stand a better chance of getting it built quicker.

Thank goodness they're both talking about it - which makes it a real possibility, Lefty scumbag sellout opponents not withstanding.

Most of the recent invasion has been central Americans that come via Mexico. So the argument that net fewer Mexicans coming doesn’t change the fact that we need to secure border.

With those turbines gone, they could educate the kids by putting a condom on that thing.

I just see a lot of people desperate to change the subject from Trump’s support of subsidies and other liberal and unconstitutional acts, to his meaningless promise to build a border wall that was approved years ago.

Its OK though. No matter how aggressive a few angry fish at FR are, the truth finds a much wider audience through places like twitter.

I was going to ask what color the sky was in his world but then I saw it was napsc...

Wind turbines.

They are going to be suffering for eight years. Maybe more like those who have been paying attention since bush I came on the scene, ushering in his bff Clinton. Having many times more good (lies) things to say about the Clinton’s than he ever even thought to think about Reagan

Trump doesn’t care that people hate him. He doesn’t care that lobs will never think he’s good for the country

That, more than stemming the invasion, is what makes him the front runner.
If he turns out to be unpredictable oh well.

At least he likes Cruz who we can hope will keep him clued in to the constitution.

If he didn’t like Cruz it would be a deal breaker.

It’s another reason he’s in front. He’s not a total wing nut

Whoever pretends they care about wind turbines should consult his drug dealer and switch substances or get off it altogether

“I think only Mexico. Mexico is used because they are the focus for the wall right now.”

According to the Border Patrol even in the 80s, 20% of the illegals crossing the Mexican border were from the middle east and orient.

Trump is not really a Conservative. I would describe him as a right-leaning Populist.

In the current scenario I will take that. In fact it may be the best we can hope for in the current cycle.

How long?

Don't quote me, but I thought two years stuck in my mind.

He he offered any sort of estimate for how long he expects it to take to build the “Great Wall of Trump”?

Just like one of his major real estate projects, he has to negotiate a time frame with the builders and the Unions.

You can bet this project and the work done on it will be handled by the various unions. The unions get along very well with Mr. Trump. They LIKE him when he builds because it creates jobs for them.

Hope he spends 5 BILLION.. after all, Mexico will end up paying for it and will still cost less than the Obamacare website which still doesn't work worth a crap.

Do you doubt that Trump can do it on schedule and on budget?

He could sell a license to use his name only and have a completely different contractor. Wouldn't be a first.
