Mexican Immigration to U.S. Reverses: More Leaving To Return Home Than Arriving

Migration of Mexicans to the U.S. has plunged to a net negative for the first time since the 1940s, bringing down the curtain on the largest wave of immigration in modern American history, according to a new study.

The Pew Research Center found that more Mexicans have been leaving America to return to their home country in recent years than arriving in the U.S. It based the study on an analysis of U.S. and Mexican government data.

Mexican migration has been falling for some time. But the Pew figures released Thursday suggest that the surge in legal and illegal Mexican immigration that helped transform America -- and remains a contentious issue on the presidential campaign trail -- may have peaked for good.

"Mexican migration to the U.S. has been one of the world's great migration stories, and this data shows it has come to an end," said Mark Hugo Lopez, director of Pew's Hispanic Research.

In a shift, Asians now represent the only group in the U.S. that is growing because of immigration.

About 16 million Mexicans flocked to the U.S. over the last 40 years—about half of them illegally. But between 2009 and 2014, some one million Mexicans returned to their country of origin, while 870,000 headed to the U.S., according to the report.

Pew's last study on Mexican immigration, in 2012, looked at the five-year period from mid-2005 to early 2010, when the outflow of Mexicans to the U.S. and return to Mexico were roughly even. During those years, 1.4 million Mexicans migrated north to the U. S. -- fewer than half as many as in the previous five-year period, when three million Mexicans came.

U.S. economic expansion fueled heavy immigration in the 1990s as Mexicans found jobs in construction, service industries and other sectors.

This is the Ministry of Propaganda trying to convince you that millions are not still crossing the border illegally. The flow is now mainly from points south of Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, etc.
Some are coming from as far away as China.
I don’t doubt that some Mexicans have decided to go home. Many only come to get as much as they can, planning to go home.

The Wall Street Journal is a mouthpiece for The Cheap Labor Express.

IF this is true, it’s because all the jobs have been going to Mexico........and the Trump effect is already working, causing them to self-deport. Go Trump!

Apparently Tamales in Mexico have to stay in Mexico, but their criminals are free to pass.

In my area (northeastern NJ) many of the day laborers have disappeared, but I doubt they’ve gone home. The economy is so bad here there is simply little work for them. Many of the businesses that catered to them are slowing down (Latino fast food, bars, etc.); I assume they’ve simply moved on to other areas in better economic health.

The left has ben doing the ‘nothing to see here’ since it became clear Trump was here to stay.

On the other hand maybe they’re already self deporting before Trumps sends packing.

It’s why they came... to get away... and it’s why they’re going back.

If there’s any truth to the article, of course.

The assertion is observably false, of course.

One wonders, could the WSJ (who genuinely support amnesty for illegal aliens, btw) might be trying to defuse the #1 election issue by L.Y.I.N.G?

But wait!?! I thought if you enforced the laws (even a smidgeon) Mexicans would NEVER SELF DEPORT?!

The number is absurd and the article is an attempt to undermine Trump and the illegal immigration issue.

Sure looks like a non-credible attempt by the WSJ to take the Mexican illegal immigration issue off the table.

Next, they will tell us that more Syrian refugees are leaving than coming.

LOL.

I sadly think you are right.

I work with a naturalized citizen that has been here since she was two. The family still maintains a vacation home in Mexico. After 9/11 she started mouthing off about “going home”. She even offered me a place in the “compound”.

My answer...not only no...but hell no. Why would I leave my country when she is under siege.
