The University Gone Feral
National Review ^ | 11/17/15 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 11/17/2015 2:49:28 AM PST by markomalley

The university, long exempted from social norms and rules, has gone wild in the 21st century — or rather, regressed to pre-puberty.

The University of Missouri campus police now request that students — a group not known for polite vocabulary — call law enforcement if someone disparages them with hurtful names.

On the same campus, a media professor shouts for students in the vicinity to strong-arm a student photographer to stop him from taking pictures in a way that she does not approve. Other staff members try to block and push away a journalist they find bothersome. Since when do thuggish faculty, in Michael Corleone fashion, call in muscle to intimidate students who are exercising their First Amendment rights?

Since when do quite privileged Yale students — in mini–Cultural Revolution style — surround and, teary-eyed, shout obscenities at their professor? Their target was declared to be guilty of some infraction against the people by an ad hoc court of whiny elites, poorly acting the role of the Committee of Public Safety. Apparently his offense was to suggest that students should not become hysterical when they see Halloween costumes they don’t like. Shouting down guest speakers, disrupting events, and mobbing individuals would not be tolerated at Disney World, so why on campus?

Amazing how the commies are all into that "forward" thing. Just like comrade B. Hussein.

I don’t know, it looks like the white girl on the left is showing her privilege and is microaggressing the oppressed minority on the right who is trying to escape to her safe zone.

It’s all about the revolution and nothing but the revolution. The revolution IS the end state. Once you get on, you never get off....alive.

The strangest campus derangement is the graft of Victorian prurience onto postmodern crudity.

Honest to God, you'd think some of these people need a Fainting Couch, once standard equipment at all of the finer Ladies' Rooms.

This was an affectation then and it's an affectation now, less justifiable in these secular days because the people who are ostensibly shocked and offended by this sort of transgression are expressing it in multisyllabic obscenities. Were this spontaneous one would have to give it a pass as just another transient political silliness, but it isn't spontaneous at all, it's carefully nurtured around entirely fake offenses by people with an ulterior political motive. That is less forgivable, and to use it as an excuse to employ violence against one's fellow citizens is not forgivable at all.

I’ve watched this happen from within and without the ivy walls for about 55 years now. Actually, I matriculated Syracuse University 61 years ago, and I think scolasticism was a bit tougher then. Your competition for grades was Korean vets who were there with a purpose in mind. The year I entered, Syracuse U tuituion was $750, and you could work for your meals in the dining halls. My room was $60 a semester, in WWII Butler buildings put up to handle the WWII vets.

scolasticism scholasticism

The Freshman English would've put a real big grammar-Nazi red mark on that error, for sure. And maybe that should have been "scholarship," eh? And "tuition," too. Egad!

A 1940 Hollywood propaganda film about the creeping rise of Nazi Germany in social society, The Mortal Storm is coming to Turner Classic Movies on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 19 @ 10:00 PM (ET).

Can it happen here? Might it happen soon? Is it happening now?

Set your DVR.

What about syntax and quotation marks?

"They say, 'Time flies'; but you can't--they pass at too irregular intervals."
