An 11-month-old boy was attacked and killed by the family's pet pit bull last night, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol. The incident occurred about 7:15 p.,m. at a home at 2700 State Route 12B in the town of Marshall in Oneida County.

The 2-year-old pit bull named Diesel was in the family's living room playing with Lisa M. Cittadino's three daughters ages 7, 10 and 12, police said. Cittadino, 32, tolid police she turned her back momentarily and then heard screams from her son and daughters.

Cittadino said she saw the dog attacking her son, and began to frantically try to get the dog to release his grip on her child, police said. Once the dog let go, she called 911 and began giving her son first aid, police said.

Police said the child was near the dog's food dish at the time of the attack, and that may have precipitated the attack.

The child was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, police said, where he died as a result of injuries to his neck and face, deputies said.

The dog was taken by the Verona animal officer, and will be euthanized at the owner's request.

Deputies said Cittadino said the dog has never been aggressive in the past.

The family has been offered counseling.

The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's officer will conduct an autopsy.

Beagles, Collies, Shih tzus, Dalmatians?

What’s wrong with these breeds? Why do these trashy people have to keep getting one of these things?

We have a saying in Boston. Not all pit bulls are owned by drug dealers but all drug dealers own pit bulls.

Breaks my heart for the poor little boy.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

People will defend this breed, but I’ve personally witnessed some terrible things with these dogs. Now I’ve adopted a shoot first policy.

Pitbulls are the muzzies of the dog world. A “moderate” can go full jihad at any time. I despise them all.

Pitbulls are nowhere near being the most popular breed. They population of dog shelters, however, disproportionally over-represents pitbulls.

Pitbull Apologist Checklist:

- All dogs are viscous, a poodle bit my grandma once
- How do you know it was a real pitbull...did you take a DNA test?
- MY pitbull is a cuddly warm little fuzzball of love. It would never attack anyone.

Doing what they were selectively bred to do, just as a retriever retrieves.

Another senseless tragedy. We use to call them Junk Yard dogs. For a reason.

Guns don’t kill people, pit bulls do.

They just have to stop making more of these beasts. Why breed more of these when there are dozens of other breeds that are vastly more fit to be pets/companions?

And I’ve noticed the term “sweet” from pit bull apologists a disproportionate amount of the time.

How strange! I’ve come to the same policy, in particular when they come charging. Sorry pooch. Don’t want what you’re selling.

Yes, other dogs can and do bite/attack people. But the attacks rarely result in death. Pit bulls are live bombs waiting to go off at the slightest trigger. I’ve told this story before, but it brought home to me how pit bulls are not to be trusted. A couple had lovingly raised a pit bull from a pup. The dog was sitting on the couch with the woman when it attacked her. The husband couldn’t get it off of her and had to shoot it (thank goodness he was home). They never could figure out what triggered the attack. The tv was on at the time, so possibly something on the tv - but to them it appeared to come out of the blue.

My opinion on why people keep breeding/owning pitbulls:

- Genuine protection (although often for illegal activity like a drug house).

- Imaginary protection - a lot of guys in the army had mean dogs to protect the misses, when they were in the field....but these dogs are so mean they usually ‘protect’ from the inside of a cage.

- Entertainment...Michael Vick needs something to do.

- Tough Guy syndrome. These guys don’t even need to use protection as a reason...just like having the biggest, baddest dog they can.

- Misguided puppy love. Its very weird to me, but most ‘animal lovers’ just looooove pitbulls. To the point of not making logical decisions - i.e. buying one as a family pet and getting a young child mauled to death. Locally, a group calls itself “Saving Death Row Dogs”...they had one of their beasts in the St. Patrick’s Day parade (not a pitbull but another large breed). Predictably, it pulled away from its clueless handler, and KILLED a spectator’s smaller dog. It never even crossed their minds that putting a large and powerful dog, with a history of violent behavior (it was ‘saved’ from death row after all) would not do well in a parade.

YES!!! The apologists would never question that a retriever is bred to retrieve or a herder is bred to herd. But, for some reason, they can't admit that pitbulls were bred to fight and kill.

Pit Bulls are good dogs, don’t be haters. It’s all in how you raise them.”

Yes they are fine dogs when raised by an owner who has knowledge of how to train a powerful breed. Most who get one don’t have a clue.

How horrible for that little boy.
I DO NOT trust these dogs, and NEVER will.
This should not happen.
I would cap one of those dogs in a heartbeat.

Just sayin—we hear all the time it’s how there raised. (It’s hard not to dislike this breed.) Yet most everytime this happens the owners just CAN’T believe the dog did this, because the dog was well adjusted. Who knows what pushes these animals over that line from family pet to killer. I could never trust this breed.
I saw a mixed breed pit bull @ a family function growl down on an infant in a car carrier as the dog came close to the child(a parent was holding the car carrier with child in it). This was a mixed pit( I’m guessing mostly pit). There is something inherent in this breed as far as I’m concerned that makes them not trustworthy around people. I am constantly on guard if/when I’m even remotely close to one. Maybe ur experiences are different?
How sad for that boy and both families....

Pit-bull owners rank right in there with mothers of young thug murderers: “But he’s always been such a nice boy!”
