An 11-month-old boy was attacked and killed by the family's pet pit bull last night, according to Oneida County Sheriff Robert M. Maciol. The incident occurred about 7:15 p.,m. at a home at 2700 State Route 12B in the town of Marshall in Oneida County.
The 2-year-old pit bull named Diesel was in the family's living room playing with Lisa M. Cittadino's three daughters ages 7, 10 and 12, police said. Cittadino, 32, tolid police she turned her back momentarily and then heard screams from her son and daughters.
Cittadino said she saw the dog attacking her son, and began to frantically try to get the dog to release his grip on her child, police said. Once the dog let go, she called 911 and began giving her son first aid, police said.
Police said the child was near the dog's food dish at the time of the attack, and that may have precipitated the attack.
The child was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, police said, where he died as a result of injuries to his neck and face, deputies said.
The dog was taken by the Verona animal officer, and will be euthanized at the owner's request.
Deputies said Cittadino said the dog has never been aggressive in the past.
The family has been offered counseling.
The Onondaga County Medical Examiner's officer will conduct an autopsy.
That's what pitbull owners always say after their dog murders or mauls somone.
Yeah, yeah, I know. The pitbull apologists are going to say it was the kid's fault (or the parents' fault) for the kid being near the dish.
That might "justify" the dog snapping at or even biting the child. But how many other dogs would hang on the way a pitbull does?
Well that's a big relief...
Who are these 'grief counselors' and why are they available on-demand like this after every horrific incident?
Pit bull defenders commenting on those nice doggies...3,2,1....
Probably social workers from the local mental health clinic.
In before “its the owner not the breed”?
It is the parents fault.....for inviting a known killer next to their baby. Pitbull just doin what pitbulls do.
I can’t even imagine the horror. I had a little Jack Russell female that would attack my older male and it was impossible to get her off of him. We finally had to find a home for her.
It is horrific to when they are latched onto one another. I can’t even imagine a the jaw of that dog. I could never have a large dog like that around my children.
They are still animals and the first time these dogs trigger can be deadly for other pets or god forbid children.
Yet another mere coincidence.
Never happened before.
Was always such a good animal.
Same bs verbatim every pitbull killing story posted. It is the fuching breed that has proven itself to be unstable and unpredictable. Jeeeeez, people will just refuse to get the repeatedly obvious through their fuching heads.
Seem to always be reading about pitbulls attacking someone. With their ability to attack and maul seemingly being part of their nature, it’s interesting that I don’t think I’ve heard of a single example of the military or police using them for a K-9 unit. Oh yeah, that’s right, they go off for no reason and once started, won’t stop.
All pit bulls should be neutered. Let the breed die out. They are usually owned by idiots. I’ve owned German Shepards, Labs, Dalmatians and now Chihuahuas. I love dogs, but I hate pit bulls.
How horrible. Poor family.
A labrador retriever (of all breeds) attacked someone in my neighborhood last week.
Pitbulls and mixes are the most numerous/popular breed now so its the `blue car phenomenon’: you bought or are thinking of buying a blue car, so that’s all you notice: blue cars.
You’ve got to watch all animals. I don’t walk the neighborhood now without pepper spray.
Pit Bulls are good dogs, don’t be haters. It’s all in how you raise them.
Sociology majors who couldn't get jobs at Burger King.
"There, there ... pit bull killed your kid. Man, that really sucks!"
Wrong. They're not even in the top ten.
And if your "blue car" theory was true, why aren't we seeing stories about the top ten dogs killing kids all the time?
Just waiting on how how vicious Labrador Retrievers are. That seems to be the common defense tactic used by pit bull owners. Blame it on the Labs!
Too late. See post number 13.
Had this happened in my house, the animal officer could have picked up the dog's corpse because I would have already "euthanized" it. Of course, it would have never happened because I wouldn't allow one of those POS in my house.
Wishing the dog to be a gentle pussycat doesn’t make it so. It’s a dog! I’m sick of people who see all animals as noble savages.
