As Paris reels from terror attacks that claimed at least 128 lives, fierce blame for the attack is being directed toward American whistleblower Edward Snowden and the spread of strong encryption catalyzed by his actions.Â
The latest deadly terror attack is bringing the "crypto wars" further toward the spotlight. The crypto wars refers to a decades-long political battle over the legality and popularity of encryption around the world.
In the years since Snowden revealed to the world the vast surveillance and spying done by Western governments, strong encryption has become an increasingly popular way for people to shield their Internet activity from prying eyes. Encryption is used by everyone from ecommerce websites to human rights activists to American soldiers to Islamist terrorists.
It's the latter group's adoption of strong encryption in particular that has attracted so much fiery rhetoric.
Fox News hosts Greg Gutfeld and Dana Perino, George W. Bush's former press secretary, took to Twitter to directly blame and even curse at Snowden.Â
Also, F Snowden. F him to you know where and back. -- Dana Perino (@DanaPerino) November 14, 2015
if the attack was aided through "whistleblowers" leaking what the NSA cannot penetrate, will that be part of the movie? -- GregGutfeld (@greggutfeld) November 14, 2015
There is no sign of how the Friday attacks were coordinated and executed. It's also not clear who exactly carried out the deadly massacres but witness accounts and video feature screams of "Allah Akbar" and mentions of Syria.
On television in America, on-screen experts quickly began speculating that encryption, as well as more precise knowledge of the West's intelligence capabilities, could have played a role in the attacks.
There is no public information about the planning behind the attack, so any suggestion that Snowden or encryption are to blame is conjecture. The pointed speculation against Snowden attracted criticism as well.

you mean the video of Hillary blaming the video?
The Angolans aren’t sweating encryption.
Just ban islam and close all the mosques.
Bunch of idiots trying to blame Snowden aren’t fooling anybody..
The group planning is done at the local mosque.
Give the Liberal idiots time, and they'll be issueing them Gun and bomb stamps. They'll be claiming it's unfair they have to smuggle them in and they should be provided free of charge! What? Why should they have to show an ID to use in the Gun and Bomb stamps, that's racist!
Note that after spending hundreds of billions every years these clowns couldn’t even spot the origin of the failure ... themselves! Always find someone else to blame your failures on .... the Administration’s “rule number one” of responsibility!
“Dana Perino, George W. Bush’s former press secretary, took to Twitter to directly blame and even curse at Snowden.
“’Also, F Snowden. F him to you know where and back.’ — Dana Perino (@DanaPerino)”
Quite the erudite vocabulary Mrs. Perino has, particularly for a press secretary.
I know, I know, I know. . . pick me, pick me! Someone gave them guns for Ramadan presents. . . and it was the Guns that made them do it! It's obvious. The evil guns are guilty, not them! If they hadn't been given the guns for presents, they'd be alive to day as would all those other innocent people too. After all every one is innocent until an evil gun steps into the picture and corrupts everything. . .
Yes
So let me get this straight. There are people who are saying that because the general public wants to keep their privacy and Snowden exposed the governments prying eyes that he is to blame for the private sector and the public finding a way to stop the NSA types from looking into their private lives so this is why the terrorists were able to do this?
Okay. Just wanted to make sure I got it right.
By the way; what a huge heaping steaming pile of bullshit.
I rarely go to other news sites but today I went to ABC and DU. It’s not snowden. You got it, Bush’s fault.
God has closed eyes and ears. Maybe because our nation has cut out eyes and cut off ears not allowing the unborn to see His creation or hear His voice.
You haven't been to the DailyMail comments section, then. It's the Brit welfare class's favorite talking point.
The worldwide collection of phone calls, emails, text messages and our total loss of privacy is all about taxes â NOT terrorism. With all this power and the demand that encryption be outlawed, not any of this surveillance has stopped one terrorist act. There was the Boston bombers, two kids using cell phones. They didnât catch that either. Then there was the two guys dressing up as women who attacked the NSA itself. They didnât know about that. Then Charlie Hebdo, that too was a surprise. Now we have an all out assault on civilians in Paris carried out by 3 suicide squads and again they were clueless. This surveillance does not work because they are really monitoring the people for taxes or they would not be storing everything forever.
They might as well argue that nobody but government should be allowed privacy and we all know we can trust government to never abuse full access to every bit of information or communication generated by citizens.....
well said
you need to reread her comment there, while she is not a hard conservative, she was right on that point
