There have been long stretches of history when the French - or the Franks, if you want to go back a ways - were master practitioners in the the arts of "bad-assery." Still, I don't know if they have enough of any sort of "national will" left to take on anyone these days, let alone the Islamists. Certainly their current political leadership gives one little hope that they are inclined to be serious about such things.
