FEDERAL SALARIES LAG BEHIND PRIVATE SECTOR BY 35 PERCENT ON AVERAGE, PAY COUNCIL SAYS
The Washington Post ^ | 11-9-15 | Eric Yoder

Posted on 11/10/2015 9:40:44 AM PST by Alfred O. Bama

Salaries of federal employees continue to lag behind those of similar private-sector jobs by 35 percent on average, an advisory committee has said in presenting what amounts to the latest data point in a long-running debate over how the two sectors compare.

The 34.92 percent "pay gap" reported Friday essentially duplicates the 35.37 and 35.28 percent numbers reported the last two years by the Federal Salary Council and is close to those of other recent years....

Under a 1990 law, the numbers are supposed to be used to virtually close the measured differences with private-sector pay. However, no administration or Congress since then has supported providing the funds to do that....

That should be the standard of measuring the correct pay for a good government EE.

Not that I think for a micro-second that the report is true.

How many people anywhere produce a million dollars worth of actual service (as opposed to millions of dollars “worth” of gaming the system)?

“The study found that federal government workers earned an average of $84,153 in 2014, compared to the private sector’s average of $56,350. Cato based its findings on figures from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA).”

Hell if I know how many governmet "jobs" are authorized by the Constitution ...

Really?

As a citizen and a taxpayer, maybe you should find out. Do a little investigating. Do a little research.

Because those precious "GS-6s" whose jobs aren't actually authorized by the Constitution should be getting ZERO from the government. Their jobs, and probably their whole agencies, should be abolished.

Nope. That is what I have idiots like you to do. Look it up and get back to me. Thankfully you don’t run the government or we would really be screwed as a nation.

Er, shouldn't they at least try to hide the fact that they blew off all the time they should have spent doing the work (i.e. identifying comparable jobs and comparing apples to apples) instead of surfing porn all day or whatever and then throwing together two lump sums as the second hand clicked toward their publication deadline?

Everyone says how wonderful it is in the government

EVERYONE says that? I doubt 10% of Free Republic would say that.

If it's the law that the pay gap must be closed, how can the government get away with not doing it?

Because the law requires total compensation to be calculated rather than what this article is doing and just comparing in pocket salary. The benefits make up more than the difference; massive numbers of federal holidays, personal days, sick days, vacation days, health care contributions, retirement contributions, etc.

Outlawing all federal unions would immediately raise the in pocket salary of every federal employee by no less than the amount of their union dues.

Yeah apparently Federal jobs have benefits like porn viewing that would get you fired in the private sector.

Yeah, and if you add in benefits, pensions, holidays, etc, I bet the federal workers are way ahead of the curve....

Throw in job protection....it's virtually impossible to fire a government worker, no matter the level of misbehavior or incompetence....that perk alone is probably worth 20% of salary....

I’m a veteran who gets to work tomorrow. While in the cube next to me, the 4 GS’s who spend time on FB, socializing, and shooting the breeze more often than not will be enjoying a day off...

Go figger.

Because it is not true?

Seriously, federal civil employees “under paid” , get real.

http://www.federaljobs.net/salarybase.htm#SALARY_TABLE_2015-GS

Here are the adjusted for locality pay scales.

http://www.federaljobs.net/paytables/saltbl-locality.pdf

Oh and lets not forget special rates. Where OPM can declare a job hard to fill and give it a bonus. Doctors and flight controllers get that.

And then there are Executive Schedule and Special Executive Service positions. Think of them as GS-16 and up. They can make up to $208,000 base pay plus adjustments.

Under payed? BS.

Well, nothing like a cold shower of reality to shut someone up about “pay disparity” or whatever term du jour is being used.
