I'm guessing the Board of Reagents made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Something along the lines of a cushy early retirement package now versus nasty litigation later with an uncertain outcome.

I'm guessing the Board of Reagents made him an offer he couldn't refuse. Agreed, with a twist. The Board is now able to bring in a hard-ass to deal with what should be regarded on one hand as childish misbehavior and on the other as breach of contract; they concluded Wolfe didn't fill the role.
I know the odds are probably against it but I am an optimist.
