Late on Friday there was a surprising announcement by the Federal Aviation Administration according to which night-time flights to and from Los Angeles International (LAX) would avoid flying over the Pacific Ocean to the west of the airport, the second busiest in the US.(snip)
...thousands of reports from Los Angeles and San Diego flooded social networks with reports of a mysterious bright light in the sky that sent Californians into panic. The San Diego Union-Tribune said police were inundated with calls "reporting everything from a flare to a comet to a nuclear bomb".
The newspaper said the light was seen as far away as the states of Nevada and Arizona. CBS-LA reported sightings in San Francisco, 380 miles (600km ) to the north.

Obama penis fail.
There's always time to panic, but I write for ZeroHedge, so the time is now.
Aren’t they diverting air traffic into LAX for unspecified military purposes? I think they have now been specified. I read that one woman actually saw the missile come out of the ocean, which isn’t stopping the UFO alarmists.
Probably not, it dropped a long way from LA.
Seems awfully close to a highly populated area for testing?
The typical social media user is an airhead prone to panic, no surprise there.
BFD.... I see military helicopters and assorted other aircraft flying around all the time.
Yep, it was a submarine launched Trident, which is the norm for the Navy when they test this system.
Do they normally launch them so close to a big city?
The military has been testing missiles at Vandenberg AFB since I went to school in SoCal back in the 70s, and people have been reporting them as everything from UFOs to nukes. Big yawn.
[BFD.... I see military helicopters and assorted other aircraft flying around all the time.]
I get f-18’s or F-16’s buzzing my house maybe twice a week. I see military helicopters practicing with their dipping sonar. Big deal
They warned the Russians and the Chinese, why didn’t they tell their own citizens?
Yes, what is unusual is the government sourced fanfare, and the amount of physical visibility of the missile in flight.
Of course, they know who you are.
Social media panics when Justin Bieber gets a haircut ... so...
That is what that area of the ocean is set up for, with lots of radar for tracking set up along the coast and out on islands. If a missile goes down, it hits ocean, not a town.
So do you think that missile that launched from out near Avalon/Long Beach a few years ago was one of ours or from a Chinese submarine, as rumored?
That makes sense, though I flew out of LAX for 10 years and don’t recall ever being re-routed due to testing near the airport. Not that they told us, anyway.
