THX1138, Logan's Run, Rollerball, Soylent Green, 1984 or Fahrenheit 451? Dystopian themed movies.

Six rather relatively well known dystopian themed movies. Excerpts taken from IMDB.

If you like dystopian themed movies you've probably seen all 6. My favorite is Rollerball.

Which one do you think the world is striving for?

---

THX1138 -- Set in the 25th century, the story centers around a man and a woman who rebel against their rigidly controlled society. Director George Lucas.

Logan's Run -- An idyllic sci-fi future has one major drawback: life must end at 30. Director Michael Anderson

Roller Ball (1975) -- In a corporate-controlled future, an ultra-violent sport known as Rollerball represents the world, and one of its powerful athletes is out to defy those who want him out of the game. Director Norman Jewison.

Soylent Green (1973) -- With the world ravaged by the greenhouse effect and overpopulation, an NYPD detective investigates the murder of a CEO with ties to the world's main food supply. Director Richard Fleischer

1984 (1984) -- George Orwell's novel of a totalitarian future society in which a man whose daily work is rewriting history tries to rebel by falling in love. Director Michael Radford

Fahrenheit 451 (1966) -- In an oppressive future, a fireman whose duty is to destroy all books begins to question his task. Director François Truffaut

How about Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior?

Great movie!

Surprised that no else has mentioned The Road Warrior. That's my favorite dystopian movie.

Fawcett would fail the “bucket of water” test miserably, at any age.

Basically, you dump a bucket of water on any “movie star”. Under the hair and makeup, no question that Jenny Agutter would win this.

Other “bucket of water” winner examples would be Audrey Hepburn, Lauren Bacall (who ALSO had great hair) and Bo Derek.

Although it's pretty much impossible to find, the made for TV adaptation of Vonnegut's "Harrison Burgeron," starring Sean Astin. It's expanded way beyond Vonnegut's original story, but in such a way to make a watchable movie and most importantly, it actually makes the story far more believable and realistic. That's something I've never seen in a movie adaptation.

I've only seen it once, on cable, in the middle of the night.

I left out Sy-Fi and fantasy. Instead I went for plausible, near plausible (Logan’s Run a bit of a stretch).

Pair them up.

Fahrenheit 451 -> 1984 -> THX1138
Rollerball -> Soylent Green -> Logan’s Run.

Just an afterthought from somebody else’s post.

I'd add "Silent Running" to the mix; it's dystopian enough to rate a mention at dystopia.com! Plus, it has the "save the earth" theme more front-and-center than even Soylent Green. The only place it goes off the rails in comparison to current-day reality is the fact that now, the Russians pretty much control manned space travel - and they ain't buying the AGW nonsense.

But hey, it still provided a few ships that would be reused in Battlestar Galactica (dystopian in its own right).

If we accept that a lot of Brazil takes place in the protagonist's head, there isn't a lot making it implausible as an alternate time line, which is exactly what 1984 wound up being.

Roddy Piper has to rescue 6 fertile women from mutant frogs.

Though not distopian, Roddy started in John Carpenter's "They Live," which does describe the earth after an alien invasion.

Yes on all counts. Hard to get through but definitely belongs on this list if for no other reason than the acting.

The “2084” is one version, as is a full length Harrison Bergernon movie that came out in the 1990s.

“The Island” is actually a more moral world than the one of “Never Let Me Go”.
In “The Island”, the owners and workers don’t tell the clones their purpose and hide the fact that the agnates are conscious people from the world.
In “Never Let Me Go”, clones are created to be harvested, the world knows they exist, and they have some freedom of movement and interact with medical staff.
The horror of the ending is that Halvsham was a failure; people weren’t convinced clones had souls, so the harvesting of clones continued, and the conditions for the next generation of clones is likened to pig farms.
In short, the people of “Never Let Me Go” have dehumanized the clones such that they continue to kill them for parts and knowingly decided to do so. In “The Island”, the owners assume people would still be horrified to know they’d killed the clone if they knew it could think.

I think we’re striving for Brave New World, with free sex and drugs, people conditioned to be happy with their “freedom” such that most don’t see the restrictions - and conservatives/traditionalists are isolated on reservations.

The scene at the ballet when the dancers revolt, throwing off their masks and weights, is great.

I have seen a well done version on YouTube, with Julie Haggerty (from Airplane!) in it. It was well done. You can rent it for $3.00

2081 Full Movie | Based on Kurt Vonnegut's "Harrison Bergeron" (1080p HD)
