An atheist professor said Tuesday that itâs acceptable to criticize Christians but not Muslims, because he does not âfearâ retaliation from Christians.
âI know what keeps me from critiquing Islam on my blog is just fear,â Phil Zuckerman said at a discussion on religious liberty at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. âIâve got three kids.
âSo I know I can say anything about Christianity or Mormonism, and Iâm not living in fear, which is a testament to Christianity and Mormonism, and thatâs wonderful. Thank you,â said Zuckerman, who is a self-described atheist and professor of secular studies at Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif.
Zuckerman was a panelist at the discussion as part of Georgetown Universityâs Religious Freedom Project at its Berkley Center.
Kirsten Powers, a Democratic pundit, recent convert to Catholicism and author of the book âHow the Left Is Killing Free Speech,â said at the event that she does not understand why Muslims can oppose same-sex marriage and not be targeted by the Left for it, but calling out Christians for their beliefs is acceptable.
Powers cited the hidden video recordings made earlier this year by Steven Crowder, who asked Muslim bakers in Michigan if they would bake a cake for a same-sex wedding and they refused.
âIf these had been Christian bakeries, it would have been on the front page of the New York Times, so Iâm wondering why weâre able to have this amicable, disagreement with Muslims for having this view,â Powers said. âWhy are we not able to do that with Christians?
âI absolutely agree with you,â Zuckerman said.
âI absolutely agree that it is okay for those on the left to critique, mock, deride Christianity, but Islam gets a free pass, which is so strange, because if you care about womenâs rights, if you care about human rights, if you care about gay rights, then really Islam is much more problematic â sorry to paint Islam with a huge brush â and much more devastating,â he said.
âAs an atheist â where on planet Earth is the death penalty meted out to atheists?â Zuckerman said. âItâs only in, I think, 24 Muslim countries.
âWhere have human rights flourished the most? In Christian nations,â he said.
âI see Christianity as a great friend of secular culture,â Zuckerman said. âI see Islam as much more of a threat, much more debilitating. Iâm not talking about Muslim individuals that I happen to sit next to on an airplane or are my neighbors. Iâm talking about doctrines and those that have the power to enforce those doctrines in the form of Sharia law.â
AD FEEDBACK Zuckerman mentioned comedian Bill Maher, actor Ben Affleck and atheist and author Sam Harris and the reaction to their remarks about Islam.
âI would say two things,â Zuckerman said. âI know what keeps me from critiquing Islam on my blog is just fear.
âIâve got three kids,â he said. âSo I know I can say anything about Christianity or Mormonism, and Iâm not living in fear, which is a testament to Christianity and Mormonism, and thatâs wonderful. Thank you.
âI would never write the same kind of stuff that I do about certain religions â Judaism, Christianity, LDS, whatever â as I would about Islam â just straight up fear,â Zuckerman said.
And these are the kind of vacuous morons we’re constantly having to defend and justify our beliefs to? F that, next time I come across one of them I think a hearty FU will do just nicely instead of trying to debate them...
“Atheist: Okay to Disparage Christians, But Islam Off-Limits Because of âFearâ”
First Atheist are cowards. On the other hand why should we care? Hell is better than where they believe they will go.
Hey Ayatolla!
Penny Starr called Mohammed "the filthy prophet" who was a "child raping murderer". I also understand she has a closet full of hilarious cartoons she drew.
This fellow needs to be harshly acquainted with the Old Testament.

Honesty.
Most of us are under a certain amount of safety (anonymity) to say what we wish about the satanic cult of Islam. That professor is not.
Here is the deep theology of Secularism/Atheism
It is absolutely dependent upon the Truth of Christianity.
Without Christianity, Secularism is impossible.
Secularism is always exterminated by various tribal notions of mysticism that do not allow the kind of absurd skepticism.
Secularism is a feature of Christian society. It cannot exist apart from it.
Wake up secular fools.
I frankly and candidly tell atheists: go ahead and be atheist but you should be thankful for Jesus and Christians everyday because He makes your world possible. I am not being sarcastic here.
When Jesus moved judgment to the afterlife, he was actually making a massive adjustment to human spirituality.
Its outrageous how Christians grovel before these fools.
Little does he know that his soul is more important to protect than his body.
He fears Islam, they have accomplished their purpose.
Without a healthy fear of the Living God of the Bible saving a puny little body is a moot point.
King James BibleIf he does not reject his belief system and worship the One True God, I think when he stands before the Judge of us all then he will experience soul piercing loss and pain.
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
And at that time it will be too late to have the courage to stand against the Evil Muslim Islamic terror system that calls itself a "religion"
While this individual (who is virtually unknown, btw) may not have the cojones to attack Islam, other far better known atheists like Bill Maher, Sam Harris, and Richard Dawkins seem to have no problem finding the intestinal fortitude to do it -- and to do it in rather devastating fashion, I would add.
Correct. Pragmatism is the only 'belief system' an atheist has.
