Ben Carson had extensive relationship to dietary supplement company despite denial

In Wednesday's CNBC Republican presidential debate, Ben Carson was asked about his involvement with Mannatech, a dietary supplement maker.

In 2009, Mannatech settled for $7 million following a lawsuit brought by the Texas attorney general over the company's claims that its products could cure cancer and autism. CNBC moderator Carl Quintanilla claimed Carson had a 10-year-long connection with the company and that it continued even after the settlement.

Carson denied the accusation, saying, "That is total propaganda ... I did a couple speeches for them, I do speeches for other people, they were paid speeches. It is absolutely absurd to say that I had any kind of relationship with them."

Carson's statement directly contradicts promotional material that came from Mannatech, as well as his own business manager Armstrong Williams, who described Carson's relationship to the company in an interview Thursday on "The Lead with Jake Tapper."

Williams defended his boss, suggesting that while Carson did have a relationship to the company, the retired neurosurgeon didn't realize all of the details of his endorsement up front and wanted out of the deal.

"He said 'I don't believe in this. I'm not going to do it,'" Williams said, recalling negotiations with the company over the endorsement. "When that was over, he made it clear to me, 'You need to get me out of this, I'm not going to do this again,' and it was over.'"

The Wall Street Journal this month reported on Carson's connection with Mannatech, saying Carson has said he has taken the company's supplements for more than a decade.

The WSJ also cited a 2004 video of Carson speaking at a Mannatech event. In the video, he credited the company's products for his prostate cancer diagnosis symptoms disappearing. The paper points out that Carson is now "cancer-free after surgery."

What a stupid question to ask someone on Free Republic.
Been on this site for 15 years. I can spot the paid trolls. You have all the hallmarks. And, I think that makes it one more time that you have not answered my direct question. Who is paying you and how? By the post, by the hour, salary, benefits?

So they weren’t infomercials. I figured. So you were the one lying, not Carson.

There are reasons not to want Carson to be President. Character, I think, is not one of them. Maybe try something else.

Yes, they were videos and infomercials because they were used to sell product at the companies conventions. You are desperately trying to excuse a bald faced lie, and it just isn’t going to happen. Even his campaign people have acknowledged his involvement in the company. He just shouldn’t have lied about it.

“Only an idiot thinks there is anything worthwhile, here. What a stupid issue.”

Well, buddy, I agree with you. Unfortunately, however, the number of people outing themselves as idiots around here has risen dramatically in the last few months.

Your post is, as always very reasoned.

Maybe that is because I agree. :)

I don’t know when Carson endorsed this product. Or if it worked for him.

I will say this...no one on that stage told 100 per cent of the truth. That is not the nature of the beast.

Politics are a nasty business.

An unforced error by Carson. He should have anticipated this would come up and denying the obvious is a mistake.

Now it’s a bigger story than it should have been.

I will continue to post articles at my discretion.

Is that what you have been showing by posting articles that are self contradictory?

Notice the spelling a selective capitalization: sTrumprette vs. strumpet. The first is what I and several others have been calling every one of the @$$hats, male or female, that have raised Donnie to the level of adulation seen over the last 8 years of Obozo. Deal with it.

In the debate he truthfully answered that he was paid to give speeches.

The moderator had tried to imply that he was on the Board of Directors of Mannatech, by prefacing the questions about Costco and Mannatech by saying he was on the boards of several companies.

Carson had nothing to do with the management or practices of Mannatech which was what the Lefty moderator was trying to deceive Americans into believing.

Trump supporters should tread lightly on associations with questionable multi level marketing companies.

The Donald was paid over $1.3 million to shill for mlm communications company ACN which is considered a pyramid scheme by many.

He directly connected the “Trump name” to this scam and glowingly hyped the investment as “better than real estate”.

ACN Video Phone Endorsed by Donald Trump: http://youtu.be/—3XGFLyxKs

He also bilked people out of millions with his deceptively named “Trump University” which was not a “university” but overpriced seminars on flipping real estate.

Deal with it.

It appears that phrase passes for discourse in your mind. Somethink akin to: Shut up! he explained.

And as for the other couple of points I raised, I guess I'll just have to deal with them, since you have provided me with enough of your valuable time. I am sorry for asking any questions. I know you have some important posting to do. You're a busy man.

And I can see now how off base my question to you was about that Shakespearean "slut" business and all that. A fellow making all of the important posts you are should never have to stoop to answering why he levels a Shakespearean term for "slut" at a female interlocutor. And, sure, you and some others do it all the time, makes perfect sense, going after that Trump fellow. I mean, who couldn't understand the appropriateness of that term, the appropriateness of such masterful invective. Will it be OK if I refer to you as our own H.L. Mencken?

So... the fact that he had no idea what he was supporting is the defense?

OK...

Obviously your commend of the English language is as lacking of you understanding of the political system in general and conservatism in particular.

I showed you the difference in spelling and capitalization. If my posts are too difficult for you to understand or if they offend your delicate sensibilities, perhaps you should take the advice of BFAC and not read them.

I also explained to you that a number of other people are using that term as well. I am looking forward to see if you make the same ignorant comments to them as well.

Oh, quite right, H.L. My commend of the English language is, well, uncommendable!

I won't take up any more of your valuable posting time, H.L. I'll just sit back and enjoy your posts!
