Sharpshooter Marilyn Williams uses Air Rifle to Defend Home

CA Sharpshooter Air Rifle Marilyn Williams

In the Eastern California town of Clovis, California, at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, Marilyn Williams, a woman who earned a sharpshooter medal in high school ROTC, scared a couple of burglars so badly that they dropped their loot and ran.

She did it with a Marauder air rifle. The Marauder is one of the more powerful popular air rifles.  With .25 caliber pellets, the pre-charged pneumatic can reach energy levels (45 foot-pounds) about two thirds of a .22 short cartridge , one of the lowest powered firearm cartridges.  The Marauder has multi-shot capacity.  It sports a 10 shot magazine in .177 and .22 calibers, and 8 shots in the .25 caliber.  The short bolt stroke allows for rapid fire.
In practised hands, the air rifle is capable of inflicting serious injury or death on a human target.

From fox29.com :

She got out her gun and had them in her scope; however, she decided not to fire. According to police, the two burglars ran off. Police tried to find them but the pair disappeared and are still at large.

The burglars dropped the loot from the previous burglary of an elderly couple, their own weapon, and a mask.

In the Marauder forum at marauderairrifle.com, they seem to believe the rifle used is the largest caliber Marauder, a .25.  The bore of the rifle shown in the pictures makes it seem possible, but it could be a .177 or a .22.

Powerful air rifles such as the Marauder can injure or kill humans, but they are much less powerful than even .22 rimfire. We should de-regulate firearms, not regulate air guns.

Yup even a .22 with a velocity of 800fps can easily penetrate a human skull or enter the chest cavity into a vital organ. I’d not want to rely on a pellet rifle for home defense though.

I have a .22 Gamo Nitro. 1200fps using Devastator ammo. Okay, have to cock between shots though.

Have you tried different pellets? Heavier pellets would reduce muzzle velocity and increase retained energy. The accuracy is said to increase markedly once the muzzle velocity drops below the speed of sound (about 1100 fps, depends on temp and air pressure).

I almost bought a Crosman Nitro piston last week. It was rated at 1400 fps with magic pellets. With normal .177 I think I read where some guy chronoed it at just under 1000 fps.

That is still a lot of power.

Does anyone remember an episode of “The Rockford Files”, where Rockford has to hold off some gad guys with a pellet gun?

Do you use the Marauder for hunting or target shooting or both?

Some say it is very quiet. What is your opinion of the noise level?

One of the reasons the single pump air rifles like the Nitro Piston are popular is that they do not lose a lot of energy from the heat of compression.

The Pre-Charged Pnenmatics are not as efficient because they lose the heat. If you are not doing the pumping, it does not matter much.

Pnenmatics should be Pneumatics.

Gamo has a video on their site that shows a feral hog being taking by one of their air guns.

http://www.gamousa.com/videos.aspx. When I last viewed it, it was the top video on the page.

We should not regulate guns. We should regulate politicians.

Ya, I’m taken down rabbits at 55 - 70 yards, so I definitely don’t want to get hit with a round from my Benjamin.

She needs to put aside that little air gun and get one of these bad boys, then she could really defend her home with an air rifle!
