Superyacht Getaway Subs And Luxury Bomb Shelters: The Elite Are The Most Paranoid Preppers Of All
Zero Hedge.com ^ | 23OCT2015 | Tyler Durden

Posted on 10/24/2015 8:42:07 AM PDT by Jack Hydrazine

When it comes to “prepping”, many among the elite take things to an entirely different level. As you will see below, the elite are willing to pay big money for cutting edge home security measures, luxury bomb shelters and superyacht getaway submarines. Some of the things that the elite are demanding for their own protection go beyond even what we would see in a James Bond film, and serving the prepping needs of the elite has become a multi-billion dollar business. Meanwhile, the media outlets that the elite own continue to mock the rest of us for getting prepared. All the time we see headlines like this one that appeared in a major American news source: “Preppers: Meet the paranoid Americans awaiting the apocalypse“. Well, if we are paranoid for setting aside some extra food and supplies for the future, what does that make the people that you will read about in this article?

The elite live in a world that is completely different from the world that you and I live in. In wealthy enclaves of major global cities such as London, elitists are willing to shell out massive amounts of money to ensure that everyone else is kept out. The following comes from an article that was just published a few hours ago by the London Evening Standard entitled “The paranoid world of London’s super-rich: DNA-laced security mist and superyacht getaway submarines“…

Business is booming because billionaires are a paranoid bunch. Take one who recently moved to Mayfair. ‘He wanted everything, from protection from cyber hacking through to physical intrusion and kidnapping,’ says Bond Gunning. ‘We ended up installing fingerprint-activated locks for family members and programmable keys for staff that limit the time they are allowed into the property and the rooms they are able to enter and exit.

‘Inside and outside we installed 24-hour monitored CCTV cameras that are so hi-tech they can tell the difference between a dog, cat and a person. In the garden there are thermal-imaging cameras that can detect heat sources in the undergrowth. One thing intruders can’t hide is the heat of their bodies.

‘Should an intruder evade the cameras or ignore the warnings they automatically broadcast, the property itself is protected by bulletproof glass and alarm sensors in all rooms. There is a bullet, gas and bombproof panic or safe room, with its own food and water, medical supplies and communications, and an impregnable supply of fresh air. Just in case the family cannot make it there in time, key rooms are sealed by reinforced shutters.’ But for many elitists, those kinds of extreme security measures are simply not enough. That is why sales of “luxury doomsday shelters” are absolutely soaring. If “the end of the world” arrives unexpectedly, high net worth individuals want to know that there will be somewhere for them and their families to go. The following is an excerpt from an article about one such facility located in Indiana…

As we roll down US Highway 41 in Terre Haute, Indiana , my guide insists I give him my iPhone. Then he tosses me a satin blindfold. The terms of our trip were clear—I wasn’t to know where we were going or how we got there. That’s because we’re on our way to the undisclosed location of an underground bunker designed to survive the end of the world, whatever form that apocalypse takes.

When I remove my blindfold, I am standing in a grassy clearing looking at a boxy concrete structure that serves as the entrance to a Cold War–era government communications facility gutted and reborn as Vivos Indiana. This is the Ritz Carlton of doomsday shelters, a hideout where residents can wait out a nuclear winter or a zombie apocalypse in luxury and style while the rest of humanity melts and disintegrates. The living area has 12-and-a-half-foot ceilings, sumptuous black leather couches, wall art featuring cheerful Parisian street scenes, towering faux ferns, and plush carpets. Faith Hill croons from a large-screen TV set in front of three rows of comfy beige reclining chairs. The cupboards are stocked with 60 varieties of freeze-dried and canned foodstuffs; an evening meal might include spaghetti aglio e olio topped with skillet fried steak chunks, a fresh tomato-and-zucchini salad fresh from the hydroponic garden, and decadent turtle brownies. An eight-by-nine bedroom is designed for four people (there are larger units for six) and comes with double-queen bunks clothed in 600-thread-count ivory sheets and duvet covers worthy of a four-star hotel, a comparison highlighted on the Vivos website. That sounds lovely.

But normal people like us cannot afford something like that. It will only be the elite that will be able to afford to hole up in underground bunkers while the world above descends into madness.

Other elitists will be taking off in their superyachts and heading out into the open ocean when things really start falling to pieces. And if their superyachts are threatened, some of them even have “getaway subs”. Here is more from the Evening Standard…

The ultimate vehicle of choice is no longer an armoured limousine or a private jet. They’re so Noughties. If you want bragging rights these days, you need your own submarine, which floats out of a sub-sea compartment in your superyacht. ‘It’s a toy, but if the worst happened, it could also be an escape route,’ says one prominent London tycoon with a weakness for Monaco-berthed superyachts — provided they have military-grade radar jammers and missile and torpedo defences. So exactly why are so many among the elite so concerned about their own security these days?

Why are so many of them going to such extraordinary lengths to prepare for worst case scenarios?

Do they know something that the rest of us do not?

In a previous article, I included a quote from an article in the Mirror that was published earlier this year entitled “Panicked super rich buying boltholes with private airstrips to escape if poor rise up“…

Robert Johnson, president of the Institute of New Economic Thinking, told people at the World Economic Forum in Davos that many hedge fund managers were already planning their escapes.

He said: “I know hedge fund managers all over the world who are buying airstrips and farms in places like New Zealand because they think they need a getaway.”

The next time that someone criticizes you for prepping, just point out what the elite are doing.

Clearly, many of them are deeply concerned that something may be coming.

So are you preparing?

BUT...do those elites know how to use a weapon effectively?

I have met and spent significant time with quite a few of the elite (meaning wealth of $100M plus). I see them as three groups: (A) those who inherited wealth, (B) those who earned wealth by producing something of value, and (C) those who obtained wealth through crony capitalism.

Groups A and C are not worthy of comment. Most fit a couple of profiles, and they are not too far from what you would guess, except that the wealthy children of involved parents often turn out to be very good at a lot of things.

Group B is for the most part impressive - people who are good at life and great at one area that made them a fortune. These are people who drive a Ford F-150 instead of a Rolls because they would feel bad about tossing a fresh-caught bass in something as unnecessarily elegant as the British car. These are people who go duck hunting and never miss, then cook a couple of ducks and freeze the rest - great cooks. These are people who replace the flush valves in eight of the sixteen toilets in their homes, and do it themselves, because it takes less time than waiting on a plumber. These are people who go to the range and whether it's pistol or rifle put every shot in the black - some a mixture of 10s and Xs, others a little more variable, but almost always good to great shots. These are all examples from direct observation of different wealthy people I have seen in the past two years. I'm guessing that Group B isn't buying a getaway; they have friends and neighbors who would help them to the extent that they needed the help.

Real preppers eat at Atomic Sub. 24 subs and you become a “submarine captain” and get a free fallout shelter.

That picture reminds me of the Washigton State ferry Kalakala that plied the waters of Puget Sound in the days of my youth.

I hope that barge doesn't wind up the way the ferry did...

Saw this article over the Summer.

That’s right, some people have so many toys that they when cruising on their super yacht they actually need another support vessel just to carry it all; things like tenders, jet skis, submarines and, of course, helicopters.

Looked at another way, the Superyacht gets to stay out at sea for as long as it needs to, while it's the "support vessel" that can raise its profile to go looking for supplies and the like.

Assuming, again, that the owner of the Superyacht has the loyalty of the crew. Including the crew's families is a really good idea. They can be kept on the Superyacht "for their own safety" (essentially held hostage) while the support vessel goes off scavenging.

I am just a dumb old farmer now (retired).
Always told people “you can’t eat gold , silver, or paper”.
Grow all my own vegetables; and the orchard produces all the apples, pears, peaches, etc. I could ever use (give most of it to the food bank).
Raise my own meat livestock and chickens for eggs.
No near neighbors, seven big semi mean dogs and lots of ammo.
I’M GOOD.

In the book “World War Z”, there’s a scene early on. The celebrities are laughing at the kids with blades on hockey sticks trying to take out the zombies and dying, dragged down. They watch in comfort as average people taking down zombies with makeshift weapons fails. And reporters are broadcasting the rich laughing at the news reports.
And then you read about the rich people’s reaction to hordes. The police have withdrawn, the average people with weapons are falling, and so they retreat to the only safe haven they know - the private compounds that the reporters have shown to be well stocked, well protected and still safe.
The private security can take down a dozen shambling zombies but can’t handle several hundred people with wire cutters, knives and families they are trying to stay safe. So the private security can’t stop all the other people trying to escape the zombies ... and the shelters fall to people seeking safety, and the zombies follow.

The lesson I learned - if you want to keep your compound and preps safe, OP SEC.
Which means you don’t tell the world about it, and you certainly don’t have celebrities around bragging about how safe they are while you’re dying.

This article counts as a violation of that rule.

Whether those who hope to use these places in case of an emergency remember that rule is to be determined.

Will their dumb kids tweet “I’m evacuating to XYZ!” and have a GPS location tagged to the location?
Will celebrities evacuating there get followed by reporters and then the hordes?
Or will they get to safety and get slaughtered by staff who would willingly come up to and until told “nope, your wife and kids can’t come, because they don’t support me?”

If you can manage to lay low for a few weeks after the SHTF, a good percentage of the feral humans will have managed to kill each other off by that time.

True, and they will leave behind all kinds of survival goodies.

Expensive coffins - one way in-out. air intake easily compromised.

Block air intake - shoot ‘em as they, one by one, come up for air.

> I was told by an iPhone expert that the fingerprint recognition software can now detect if the finger used to try to open a scan/lock is alive or not. Did not validate, but it would stop all the hollywood scriptwriter scenerios where the bad guy chops off fingers or gouges out eyes to get past these locks...

i imagine a fresh, newly chopped finger would register as alive "enough" to do the job

Interesting info, thank you. Not too surprising either. I bet your “category B” has very few of the “look at me” types also.

When I say real life skills I mean skills that will keep you alive in a world that has gone mad. I’m talking the things very few people can do today. Milk a cow. Slaughter a pig. Harness a horse. Castrate livestock. Plant and harvest crops the old way. Few people ever even have an opportunity to learn things like this.
