Republicans are consistently attacked whenever they mention reforms to entrenched entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. But presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson is going boldly where no Republican has gone before: declaring he would abolish Medicare completely. As Politico reports, Carson would eliminate the program that provides health care to 49 million senior citizens, as well as Medicaid, and replace it with a system of cradle-to-grave savings accounts which would be funded with $2,000 a year in government contributions.
When pressed on his position in May by CNBCs John Harwood, Carson said Americans would support the elimination of Medicare when presented with the facts of his plan. When people are able to see how much more freedom they will have, and how much more flexibility they will have, and how much more choice they would have, I think its going to be a no-brainer, he said. Not surprisingly, Politico says GOP strategists and conservative health care wonks scratching their heads. This isnt a borderline issue. The politics of this are horrific, said Doug Holtz-Eakin, head of the American Action Forum and health care adviser to Sen. John McCains 2008 presidential campaign.
Do we really care what an advisor on McCains failed 2008 campaign says? Maybe the fact that Ben Carson is actually a medical professional means he might have an understanding about how the industry works? And havent these establishment types noticed Ben Carson doesnt really care about politics? Which is why perhaps hes leading the GOP field in Iowa according to the latest Quinnipiac poll?

I agree. He’s going too far.
For a smart man, Carson says some amazingly stupid things.
You are correct. The senior vote would break heavily for Hillary if Carson is the nominee!
Didn’t Carson leave a sponge in someone’s head after brain surgery lmao
Carson’s April 2015 interview in National Review quoted him as saying he has the same goals as Al Sharpton just different means. It still boils down to his support of social justice and we have suffered 7 years of that race baiting.

Yes, he really does. It’s a little surprising.
go dr Ben........ pay no attention to the ignorati that don’t pay attention
Yes he did.
Stripping the elderly of their health care coverage is not a recipe for winning.
I don’t consider soctal security an entitlement...they have been stealing money from my check for 40 years...that is my money.
Soctal=social. I HATE AUTO CORRECT!
I seriously doubt that Carson would take away health care coverage for the elderly. He will replace current health care coverage with something considerably better and less costly, and easy to switch to, do you not agree?
Dr. Carson has talked before about getting rid of all insurance companies and moving everything to HSAs, which doctors would no doubt love but which is going to be more than difficult to implement as a serious platform or legislative proposal.
I do not. Not based on what we know of his proposal.
For those of us who were forced to ‘contribute’ to Medicare for the length of our income producing years & are now retired on Soc Sec, what are WE expected to do? $2000 a year from Uncle Sam won’t cover any meaningful medical care for many of us.
Using such a program with income earners who are in their 20’s or 30’s along with an employer medical benefit might work-—but this plan seems to leave all retirees & those who worked WITHOUT medical benefits totally thrown under the bus.
