I flew in the Ohio ANG after I served 5 years active duty as a reserve officer. My unit flew F-84Fs and, after I left, were assigned F-100s, A-7s and F-16s over a 30 year period. When a pilot is assigned to a guard unit he is fair game to be called to active duty and MANY units are over time. The last call up of my unit was the Korean War but all pilots flew. George W. Bush did put his life on the line by just going to USAF Pilot Training. He flew the F-102 (that I know) and that airplane did not see action in Vietnam.
