Canadian Liberals win landslide majority in election, unseat Conservative government

Canada's Liberal Party, led by the son of the country's most famous political figure in the second half of the 20th century, ended the nine-year Conservative premiership of Stephen Harper with a landslide victory in Monday's federal election.

According to a tally by the Canadian Press, the Liberals passed the 170-seat threshold needed to gain control of parliament at 12:15 a.m. ET Tuesday. In all, the Liberals won 184 seats. The Conservatives were a distant second with 99 seats, while the left-wing New Democratic Party placed third with 44 seats.

The results mean that Justin Trudeau, 43, a former schoolteacher and son of the late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, will become the second-youngest leader in Canada's history. Trudeau's Liberals had been favored to win the most seats, but few expected a majority and fewer foresaw the final margin of victory.

"We beat fear with hope," Trudeau said in his victory speech to supporters in Montreal early Tuesday. "We beat cynicism with hard work. We beat negative, divisive politics with a positive vision that brings Canadians together. Most of all we defeated the idea that Canadians should be satisfied with less."

Scratch off another Israel ally.

I just talked to a friend from Toronto. He is a brilliant scientist and a hard worker who has very little time or patience for politics. He votes liberal because his perception is that liberals are compassionate, tolerant and diverse from inclusive cosmopolitan cities, whereas conservatives are narrow-minded oil cowboys from Alberta.

The leftist media endlessly played the angle that “Harper is heartless because he won’t spend money to bail out the free-spending Provinces, like Ontario” (though of course they didn’t outright say that).

See? Try to be responsible and spend money sensibly, and our media ridicules you as “mean”. It virtually guarantees that the big-promisers always get elected, so there’s no incentive to plan or budget cuz you’ll just get thrown out of office. Gov’t giveaways, that the key to electoral success in Canada.

Canada is hopeless.

“...”Liberalism” in US is more similar to Conservatism in Canada. Conservatism in the US is something we simply don’t have in Canada... our most right wing party would still be considered Liberal by US standards. Our most left wing party (NDP) which has the popular support of about 35% of the country would be considered pure socialists in the US.

Unfortunately the Canadian Parliamentary system certainly does not often reflect the actual voting re the popular vote. The popular vote across the board was as follows.

Liberals 39.5%
Conservatives 31.9%
NDP 19.7%
Others about 6%.

There have been calls for proportional representation. Prior to this election, Justin Trudeau hinted he might consider it. In short, nearly 60% Canadians did not vote for Trudeau.

True. But 57.6% very clearly voted for the Left.

One of the first and major challenges facing Trudeau is the abysmal condition of Canada's military forces.

Example 1 - The Sikorsky CH-124 'Sea King' helicopters have been in continuous service since 1963 and it was only in 2009 that the Ministry of Defense (HARPER's Ministry of Defense) finally got off their dead asses and ordered replacements, and guess what?

They just received SIX new replacements (Sikorsky CH-148 Cyclones) just this past June. Meanwhile, the Sea Kings continue to be used as necessary, and while the phrase "flying death trap" has been overused, it certainly applies in the case of the aged Sea Kings.

Example 2 - Canada's surface fleet is wasting away from age, rust and related reliability issues, and HMCS Protecteur (commissioned in 1969) is a great example, being one of only two surviving Canadian supply ships, (“oilers” that re-fuel other ships at sea), it remains in service because it has taken over 10 years to finally settle on a design and authorize replacement, and the new ships won’t be completed until 2018 at the earliest. At one point, Canadian Navy personnel were combing eBay for parts to repair components of the Protecteur because the original manufacturers were either out of business or no longer supplied replacement parts.

Example 3 - Canada's submarine "fleet". The Liberal government of Jean Chretien purchased four mothballed diesel-electric boats from Tony Blair's Used Submarine Shoppe in the UK back in 1998 for $896 million dollars, on their maiden voyage back to Canada, one sub caught fire, one sailor died, others injured, it was obvious from the beginning that they were nowhere near being operational or even seaworthy. The Harper government has poured millions more into those lemons, and achieved a monumental goal earlier this year, it was announced that 3 out of the 4 subs were 'operational' however only 1 sub can actually fire torpedoes. Not content to waste approximately 1 billion dollars by the Chretien regime, Harper followed up in 2008 by authorizing an additional 1.5 billion for 'support and service' of those four seagoing jokes.

Justin Trudeau has gone on the record as saying that he will 'stand up' to Vladimir Putin, however if Putin decides to move into Canadian arctic waters, you can be certain that the current sorry state of the Canadian Navy will be unable to do anything except issue press releases objecting to whatever Putin chooses to do.

As I said to a fine Canadian last night who said he "didn't give a crap about an old crap navy", a nation unable to protect it's borders and coastline is NOT a nation, it is a future conquered territory awaiting it's occupier.

That is what Justin Trudeau had better be thinking about.

He is a former part time Drama teacher. As far as I have read that is it and nothing much else and not much different than we have here. Enjoy the hell you unleashed on yourselves liberal Canadians.

Looks more like a drama queen to me.

Point well taken. Indeed I never met an NDP voter who would choose a Conservative over a Liberal.

Just trying to put a brave face on this disaster. (chuckle)

Oh, I’m sure Trudeau will not be divisive. He won’t work against families by taking away their tax benefits. He won’t make Alberta the kicking ball like his Dad did. Sure.

As a Canadian I generally agree. Harper didn’t go along to get along with the world, which is why he was called a “dictator”.

The worst of it is this:

1) The Conservatives defeated Section 13, the kangaroo court that oversaw prosecution of “hate” speech. Trudeau will bring it back.

2) Harper left a number of Senate vacancies that Justine can now fill

No, what happened was that swing voters went in a landslide to Trudeau. The 8% Harper captured last time were Justin’s to be had due to expert character assassination.

The CPC may as well fold tents. Let the NDP and Liberals battle it out for the nation they culturally own.
