Neurotically ignoring the fact that Donald Trumps position on immigration has catapulted him to the lead for the Republican presidential nomination, the media diminish his soaring poll numbers with a scrolling series of rationalizations. Trump might or might not be the nominee, but the dismissals of him are wishful thinking, not historical fact.
All summer, for example, we were smugly assured that polls mean nothing this far in advance of an election. Sen. Marco Rubios (R-Fla.) campaign manager Terry Sullivan assured Politico: Show me the candidate who was first place in August who ended up winning in February. I hope Rubios advisers are as sure about this as they were about amnesty being a big hit with voters. Then it was September, and Trump was still in first place, so Rubio boasted to CNN, We want to be in first place in February, not in August or September.
The way things are going, at some point, Rubios line will have to be, We want to be in first place in March, not in February. No, wait! We want to be first place in June, not in April. In fact, most candidates who were in first place the summer before an election year went on to be the nominee. Luckily, Politico is not a website primarily concerned with politics or it might have known this. Among them: Ronald Reagan in August 1979, Walter Mondale in August 1983, Michael Dukakis (tied for first) in August 1987, Bob Dole in August 1995; George W. Bush in August 1999 and Mitt Romney in August 2011.

Oh, good another LIV FReeper or are you just a hindsight is 20/20 Monday morning quarterback?
Neither. I’m smarter than you and better informed than you, and therefore know better what I am talking about than you.
Good day.
Actually, Trump is JUST like Reagan... but only in one way. Reagan tapped into the Populist sense of the citizenry. Love him or hate him — and I know you hate him — Trump is tapping into the same sense.
Who ran Congress when Reagan agreed to the “limited amnesty”?
Didn't you once say you would never vote for him? Why are you falling for the media spin?
Trump is a petty crybaby much of the time. I don’t recall Reagan having little spats with every reporter/host who asked him a tough question or had someone on their program who had something critical to say about him.
Reagan was bigger than that. Reagan was a happy warrior, went over the heads of the naysayers in the media, had a long history of conservatism before he ran for President, etc.
One thing I think we can say for sure, Trump is no Reagan - not even close. But to be fair, Reagan is gone and we can’t sit around waiting for another Reagan clone.
Trump is, at best, a wildcard. A polished realityTV host who flip flops on positions and who he funds depending on what his needs are at the moment. Trump is, no doubt, a deal maker per his own words. Reagan cut deals too. Everyone does. What is important though is where to draw the line, and that requires understanding the underlying arguments of what conservatism is. I do not think Trump has a clue in that department.
I think you’re wrong, but I hope that we will have the opportunity through a Trump presidency to know for sure.
Pooh-pooh is not an argument.
You are really willing to risk the future of this country on the remote chance Trump would do the right thing? It would be virtually a third term for Obama, except there would be no opposition.
.
The only way that Trump compares to any part of Reagan is the part Reagan carried behind him.
Politically, Trump is a total flake and fake.
A chameleon.
Change positions like socks (two per day).
Reagan never did anything to prevent a real conservative from winning an election.
.
.
>> “Trump unless he just utterly self-destructs, has a good chance of being the nominee.” <<
.
How?
There are two voters against him for every one for him.
He can’t help but lose every run-off election.
.
I don't know whom you support, but I don't doubt your sincerity.
.
>> “He gave us an amnesty and legalised millions of lawbreakers” <<
Reality:
Reagan was double-crossed by congress, even some from his own party.
(Deja-vu all over again)
.
.
Exactly
Nope.
Why are you falling for the media spin?
If I did, I'd hate him.
.
You misspelled FARCE!
.
.
>> “If I did, I’d hate him” <<
Laz, you’re way smarter than that.
The media have created him and held him in our face for most of this year.
