The reality is that we were up against barbaric terrorist pirates sponsored by the Islamic rulers of North Africa, then known as the Barbary Coast.

And why did those pirates feel free to prey on our shipping as well as to enslave our sailors who were captured? BECAUSE WE WERE INFIDELS and therefore had no rights that the Muslims recognized.
