Three Greensboro teens accused of killing a man with a fire extinguisher over the meager contents in his pockets were indicted by a Guilford County grand jury this week.
Larry Eugene Brown, 74, of 133 Greenbriar Road Apt. A was killed July 29 while walking to the bus. He died of massive blunt force trauma to the head, according to police. An arrest warrant states Brown was struck with a fire extinguisher. He was robbed of his wallet, a flashlight, a cell phone and $3.
D’Angelo Nathaniel Matthews, 17, of 3503 Sherbourne Lane, is indicted on charges of first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was previously only charged with the first two counts.
“There was evidence to support the (additional) charge,” said Howard Neumann, Guilford County chief assistant district attorney who will try the case.
In addition to Matthews, Christopher Shakel Williams, 16, of 3616 Martin Ave., and Ketrellia Monaja Harris, 15, of 1326 Ogden St., are indicted on the same charges as Matthews. The trio is accused of conspiring to rob Brown that morning, then hitting and killing him with a fire extinguisher.
Williams was 15 at the time of the crime and Harris was 14, according to police. Both were initially charged in juvenile court and had court hearings on Sept. 3 to transfer their cases to Guilford County Superior Court, according to court documents. The cases were transferred based on the seriousness of charges. Both suspects had family attend the hearings, court documents state.
Williams and Harris are both in the Guilford County Juvenile Detention Center with bail set at $2 million secured, according to court documents.
Matthews had been in the Guilford County jail without bail. Matthews’ attorney, Mark Cummings, filed a request for a bond reduction earlier this month requesting an unsecured bond and house arrest, according to court documents. According to jail records, Matthews did get a bond reduction: his bail is now set at $2.5 million, which must be paid in cash. Matthews was 16 at the time of the crime.
The teens are accused of driving around in Harris’ mother’s Plymouth Voyager minivan early in the morning on July 29, according to court documents. Police found an empty fire extinguisher near the apartment complex where Brown lived, and got some information from the apartment complex’s video surveillance. They also got information about suspects from a Crime Stoppers tip, court documents state.
When police searched the minivan, they found evidence of a white/yellow powder — which was also found around Brown’s body, powder around an air vent and a ring pin similar to what’s on a fire extinguisher, a court document says. Police also took photos that show a positive reaction with Blue Star, the court document states. BlueStar is a chemical used by police to test for the presence of blood.
Brown usually walked to the bus each morning about 5 a.m. Police received two calls about a man down in the area on July 29 — one at 5:30 a.m., and another about 6:10 a.m. Brown was found off the side of the road near Church Street and Greenbriar Road, with a powder that appeared to be from a fire extinguisher on and around him, court documents state. A zip tab similar to what’s used to secure a fire extinguisher was found in the road.
Information on the next court dates for Mathews, Harris and Williams was not available.

All those state laws are unconstitutional and anyone in jail for owning firearms is a political prisoner put there by traitors to this country who if it was up to me would be immediately removed from office and tried for treason because what they are doing is no different from someone being incarcerated for practicing freedom of speech or freedom of religion. I know that area of Greensboro to some extent, it went from textile mill workers, working poor basically, to Section 8 and public housing over the past couple of decades. There are elderly retired there who own their modest little houses mixed in with renters and a large contingent on public assistance. I wouldn’t call it a high crime area but it’s slipping.
