The 2016 presidential candidates in both parties are burning through their cash about 25% faster than in prior elections, despite the expanded role of super PACs that have collectively raised hundreds of millions of dollars to back their campaigns, new disclosures show.
For current and former candidates who had released fundraising details as of Thursday evening, ahead of a midnight Federal Election Commission deadline, their campaigns had spent an average of 67% of the funds they raised this year through Sept. 30. During the same period in the past two elections, the average burn rate was 54%, according to analysis by research firm Echelon Insights.
How campaigns manage their money influences the decisions of wealthy donors. The departure of former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker from the Republican race earlier this year leaves several billionaires and other wealthy donors looking for a new candidate.
At least two GOP candidates have dangerously low accounts. Kentucky Sen. Rand Pauls report shows he has less than $2 million in cash, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has a little more than $1 million.
On the Democratic side, some donors are on the fence or waiting for a decision by Vice President Joe Biden.
When youre fighting for donors, they care how their money is being spent, said Katie Packer Gage, deputy campaign manager to GOP nominee Mitt Romney in 2012.
In addition, candidates who can prove they will be viable deep into the primary fight are more attractive to donors. That ability to show that you can play in more than one state is a signal of a campaigns strength, said Kevin Madden, a longtime GOP strategist.

Million here, million there and before you know it you are talking about real money.
Except for Trump. He seems to know the value of a dollar.
When youre fighting for donors, they care how their money is being spent,
A good point-and proof of what Trump has said. That those who donate OWN the candidate.
I hope Trump understands that he himself can be fired if he gets the job.
What in the world are they spending their money on? I forget these guys are even in the race more often than not, then have to look them up to see if they still are. I have to respect Perry for cutting his losses the quickest.
It is always easy to spend someone else’s money. THAT is what politicians do, doncha know?
How much has Trump spent?
How much of his own money?
How much of donated money?
It really doesn’t matter since he has been put spent at least 10 to 1 by several of the professional politicians.
Put = out
For the nit picking spelling Nazis on here.
Probably because of Trump. He has sucked up so much of the media air time they all are struggling to get their message out.
For example, Carson and Trump were both in GA last weekend. Trump got 95% of the media attention time. The result is all the other canidate have to buy ads to get their message out.
In Hillary’s case, she is getting so much negative news she has to do something to try and stop the death spiral
All costs are up under Obama’s stagflation.
our dear leader spends $1.5 BILLION dollars on he and his family EVERY single year- these are personal expenses- not expenses accrued from duty of office I believe-
Well unless you are D.J. Trump. :-)
Straight from the Well Doh Department. I wonder how much that little study cost the taxpayers?
Try “Duh” instead of “Doh”.
