The problem is resolved - I contacted Customer Support at Carbonite yesterday and the guy on the other end of the line, who spoke unaccented English, put it all together for me.

The long and short of it is that my original restore was interrupted before all the files were restored. When I brought the system up I noted all the lost files and attempted to restore them folder by folder. This way lies madness - I have 168 Gigs on my HD.

The gent from Carbonite restored files on a folder basis for a while when the light obviously dawned on both of us.

He restored all the files to my mirror image drive, from where they are now being restored one-by-one to their customary niche in my labyrinthine HD. That process started late yesterday morning and should conclude early tomorrow evening.

Life is good.
