The Talk: Nonblack Version

What kills me about the Black version of the talk, at least in the stories I read on it, is that it is so dis-empowering. These moms were basically telling their sons, “the cops are out to get you, and there’s really nothing you can do about it except avoid the cops.”
The version I got was more, “In the street, the cop is judge, jury, and executioner, and some cops are outright idiots, so wait for your day in court. Your job when dealing with cops is to keep things cool and not get shot,” along with specific advice on how to do that (”keep your hands in sight, don’t make any sudden moves,” etc.).
I suspect white liberals don’t tell their white kids how to deal with cops, but my white conservative dad sure did. But he did it in a very empowering way.
IMHO, teaching your kids to look for reasons to be offended is the last thing any caring parent should do. Kids who learn gratitude are so much happier in the long run, plus gratitude is actually one of the best sources of self-discipline when trying to think long-term. It’s one of the healthiest emotions going, so why discourage it?
Life is hard. Gratitude and being able to find positives within difficult situations are important survival skills. Ta-Nehisi Coates is doing his level best to cripple every black kid he can get hold of. Insanity.
Smith is an idiot.
He drew parallel lines between Coates and Derbyshire as though they had equal standing in their views.
They do not. Coates is a racist idiot. Derbyshire is a genius.
Derbyshire was a brave man and his comments in that article were spot on.
I use them to help my wife be safer in public.
You know, advice like “Do not go to places where large amounts of black people are known to gather” and “If you notice blacks gathering in a place, leave that place immediately”.
All that was simple common sense in days gone by. Now it is super controversial.
Well guess what? I am concerned solely and wholly with meeping my family safe.
Interesting how a law abiding black person surrounded by white people is not at risk, but a lone white person in a black area can expect to be a victim of racial violent crime as policy.
