being on the meds can be fine and sensible

"Can be" isn't good enough if a side effect is removing people from an ability to handle reality, and leads to homicidal and suicidal behavior. Perhaps the solution to mental disorders lies elsewhere...cleaning up the violence in our culture, increased physical activity, more community ties and responsibilities, etc

Some opine that the problem with such meds is they DO restore one’s ability to handle reality ... giving them the cognitive tools to carry out the mass murders they only fantasized before.

Psychoactive meds have a wide range of applications & influence. I’m just speaking from close proximity to someone who needed it (yes, it actually was helpful), but when (several times) 2-3 doses were missed, O.M.G.W.T.F. it was bad for a week. Everything made sense to the patient, and the sensible reaction was a scathing screed of verbal abuse delivered with such precision & clarity & force that you’d not know what the he11 was happening but you sure were the he11spawn causing it. Getting off the meds involved weeks of opening capsules and counting individual grains to SLOWLY reduce the dosage. Some people are unstable, some meds do help, and going cold-turkey on those meds for as little as 1 day can send someone into a rage few have ever encountered.

And alongside that issue, some people are just plain f***ed up from the start, stuff piles on, and they just decide to take as many with them as possible by any means necessary (recall the guy who stole a tank and drove it down the freeway; recall the guy who torched a dance club with a gallon of gasoline).
