A new new study is showing astonishing results that are sure to make the NFL uncomfortable once again over concussions. In the study, Frontline reports 87 of 91 former players have tested positive for brain disease.

The disease is called CTE (or chronic traumatic encephalopathy). It’s a disease found in some football players derived from repeated head trauma. The disease is linked to dementia, memory loss, and depression as well as other behavioral changes.

It is the moms who are behind it. You hear about ‘soccer moms’ all the time, but very few ‘football moms’.

It really bothers the Left that contact sports exist. We should all wear helmets and padding when we go for a walk. /s

You'd think all those expensive heads would have the very best helmets around them.

True that. Old age, drugs, alcohol, performance enhancers, global warming to name a few could have an influence...

There is another red flag in the story. 96 percent of those checked means that they probably had a reason to check the individuals. It’s a self-selecting group.

I also wanted to see what percentage of NFL players were checked - it wasn’t in the excerpt.

Belay that last post. Less than 100 players checked - the self-selection bias overrules any validity in the premise of the study, IMO.

I can see this. I know several players and the older ones are obviously affected.

That said, high risk brings high reward.

“A test developed by researchers at UCLA could use a routine PET scan to check players for evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a degenerative neurological disease that has been linked to repeated head trauma and until now could only be diagnosed posthumously.”

http://www.wired.com/2013/01/pet-scan-cte-test/

Can also be used for vets and active who have been through IED explosions or even vehicle rollover training, etc.

Brain damage isn’t always permanent. Might take 20 yrs? just a guess but finding out what spurs growth would be paramount especially for the young.

I think it’s probably right, or close to right.

And while I think everybody has to pick their poison, and any kid with a shot at millions should take it, NFL football will die on the vine unless there’s a fix.

I think the problem is collision velocity (which is the TV product). Live games are great at almost any level, but only NFL-level athletes can produce the spectacular hits that make up highlight reels.

“Safer” helmet designs make it worse, by protecting the skull better, thus allowing more concussions.

I’m not sure there’s a fix that will preserve the TV revenue.

And yet the fight game, boxing... hey this is the darling of the Leftists. No need to step in there...

This is a red neck sport. It kills the Left to see it so popular.

This is the global warming of sports.

I wonder how many brought the problem with them from college, and, then, how many were inflicted from their high school days.

Then, we must ask how many played soccer in grade school, where advancing the ball with a header was prevalent.

Someone should study the brains of liberals, not NFL players.
