A young Marine was found dead from a gunshot wound to his head at a marksmanship range at Camp Pendleton early Monday, officials said.
The Marine, from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, was part of a training exercise in which live ammunition was used, said officials at the Marine Corps base.

Dear God.
nowadays you gotta wonder if the shooter has something against another person, or if it was gross incompetence aiming too low.
First prayers for the Marine, secondly I don't get your comment, how do you shoot someone in the head by aiming to low? I've never seen a firing line where one person is firing behind the other or where the target is up in the air.
Suicides have occurred on the range before. One led to a change in ammunition handling and distribution.
We did a live fire move and cover n army basic in 81.
Bump for more info as this develops. Thanks.
RIP
Prayers for his loved ones
Depends on whether it was a qualification range, or a fire-and-maneuver live-fire range.
My infantry companies did live-fire (fire and maneuver) many times
He was probably thinking of one of those live fire exercises where you low crawl under barbed wire while they shoot over your head.
Sorry, but it is stupid to use live ammo. I understand why, but at what cost? One life is one too many. They need to find another way to do this.
You train the way you fight.
Rico are you qualified to repair a helmut.
Thank you for setting me straight, I should of course have thought of that.
We had live fire in training in 65, we were crawling through a obstacle course with a machine gun firing over us (later I saw it was set up to fire way over a standing person). It gave us an idea what it sounded line to be down range.
Also, on the range at that time they had people in trenches that after firing at targets they would pull the targets down and mark where they were hit. Not sure if they still do this.
So, accidents can happen.
We also practiced with live grenades.
War is dangerous, training for war can be just as dangerous.
GOTTA be Army!
Uhmmm. The trenches are called "butts", having men stand in those "butts" and muscle the targets, on sliding racks, is called "pulling targets", and yes, they still do this way.
Lord knows, I'm REALLY trying to restrain some other comments. I'm afraid I'll do myself an injury.
I've been pulling and pasting, putting a spotter in each and every hole since I was 12 years old. I was amazed, when I first went to Edson Range, that not everyone else in my boot camp platoon had been pulling targets since puberty.
I can't remember the age when I was told, "You don't look over the top of the berm." This can't be something that stupid.
Paintballs. Maybe there can be some agreement from the Other Guys about paint balls... I mean, they REALLY sting.
