Well done, feminism. Now men are afraid to help women at work
The Telegraph ^ | 01 October 2015 10/04/2015 | Martin Daubney

Posted on 10/04/2015 6:44:39 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

A new book claims that male office workers are now so afraid of being on the receiving end of a sexual harassment case, they are reluctant to mentor, assist, befriend and even hold open doors for female colleagues.

Crushingly, the book, Sex & The Office suggests men now view such ordinary, decent behaviours as “too risky” – and, in what will be a bitter irony for equality campaigners – claims that, as a direct consequence, women are now failing to advance at work.

This terror of being accused of sexual harassment is now so common it has its own term, “backlash stress”. It sounds like something straight out of a Claims Direct ad – where the only victims are men.

The book’s author, Kim Elsesser, a research scholar at the University of California, argues that a “sex partition” has sprung up, which impedes women from building the vital network of contacts both within the workplace and socially.

And the author should know about tough working environments: she’s a former equities trader at Morgan Stanley.

Tellingly, Elsesser adds that companies themselves are contributing to this mess, as they are now so terrified of legal action they send staff on sexual harassment training courses, and are duty-bound to follow up on any allegation, however minor.

Ludicrously, Elsesser cites examples of men who have been dragged in by their HR departments for simply opening a door for a female colleague or complimenting her on a new suit. “Stories like these spread around workplaces, instilling a fear that innocent remarks will be misinterpreted,” she says.

No s**t, Sherlock!

It’s work. It’s not about “women embracing their natural role”

OMG.

I’m a teacher and I wouldn’t close my door while with a student (male or female) either.

More so now with all the lawsuit crap but I do remember a time when my college profs didn’t have to worry about that.

You’re a “weaker vessel?”

Well ok then. I never thought of it as that.

I’m not weaker in all areas and I ain’t no “vessel” in any area.

My Mechanical Engineer daughter works with men, all the time, just as she attended college classes with all men all the time. And, it was interesting and uncomfortable most times for her.

She’s a lady. A smart lady. But she has to deal with men all day and they can be gross, as she says, “Mom, they are so gross.” She’s the only girl and it can be tough when they talk about locker room crap. I tell her, just tell them they talk that way because they have small dicks...she won’t of course, and ewws me when I say that. Not all men were raised well.

Right?!

I hate all this bonding with coworkers. And, being odd man out who doesn’t want to bond with people I work with other than those where it comes naturally.

And at work, that’s the way it should be and the way it always was prior to this feel good crap from HR.

>> they have been told not to ever compliment a woman.

Wonder who the Feminazis hate more; the men that compliment women, or the women being complimented.

In terms of vocation, few things piss me off more than a two-faced bitch with a dick. Women don’t bother me as much. And the cunning stunts are easy to identify — I ignore them.

I only recall one encounter about twenty years ago where a young lady gave me attitude for holding the door. I was like, “Dudette, what’s your problem?”

Which happens but I hope it doesn’t cloud one’s behavior for a lifetime.

I was taught to be gracious and I’ve taught my kids to be that way too: Say thank you/appreciate doors being held open, etc. Give up your seat on the bus, because it’s the right thing to do not because you’ll be acknowledged for it.

Don’t do those things if it’s gonna cause you to freak out, or you expect something in return. It’s courteous. It’s the right thing to do. To hell with how it is received.

You’re holding that door open because you were raised that way, as a gentleman. And that’s the right thing to do no matter the response.

It’s not so much short-term or long-term as micro and macro.
