Apache Oil, just before the "Arab Spring" destabilization began, made gigantic discoveries of oil in the western part of Egypt. Egypt wanted to control the find, and Libya controlled the nearest port, Benghazi. So, what's the answer? Overthrow the strong nationalistic governments using local unrest, then fill in leaders the US/EU/NATO would control Only problem is the people who did the overthrowing weren't about to let the west take control, so they became not just trained and armed, but angry and dangerous.
Then there's Qaddafi's billions that were (and are, I think) sitting in Italian banks. He was threatening to pull out that money, which would've meant a total meltdown for the Italian banking system.
It's all conspiracy theory, for sure. But it makes some sense.

He was also coining a gold dinar which he intended to circulate all over the mid east and Africa and selling Libyan oil for gold only, undermining the Euro and the US petro dollar, threatening the stability of the dollar as the world's reserve currency.
That's what I I've read. Not being an economist I don't know if it's relevant.
I have read that there were about 550 billion good reasons to take out Qadaffi. They were good as gold and in Libya’s central bank.
Obama talks about ending the war in Iraq (we weren’t at war with Iraq anymore) and Afghanistan and then takes it upon himself to START a war in Libya without Congressional approval.
