Three days into its bombing campaign in Syria, Russia on Friday at last targeted Islamic State positions, striking at the defacto capital of the terror organization and at least one other site.
The Russian strikes at the Islamic State came after two days in which its aircraft attacked locations belonging to other fighting groups opposed to Syrian President Bashar Assad, including CIA-supported rebels, sparking calls for the Obama administration to do something to protect fighters it had trained and equipped.
But President Barack Obama made clear that the U.S. had no plans to deepen its role in Syria.
Were not going to make Syria into a proxy war between the United States and Russia, Obama said at a White House press conference. That would be bad strategy on our part.
He also rejected calls he should act to preserve U.S. credibility and influence.
This is not some, you know, superpower chess board contest, and anybody who frames it in that way isnt paying very close attention to whats been happening on the chess board, he said.
But there were signs that U.S. influence over events in Syria was eroding, with the Kurdish militia that has been Washingtons closest ally on the ground there extending a public welcome to Russia and offering to fight alongside Russia against the Islamic State. It also asked Moscow for weapons.

Because you got your butt kicked.
This could’ve gone so damned differently... but Obama.
If there are any sympathetic characters in that mess, it is the Kurds. To see them aligning with and supplied by Russia demonstrates the loss of any high ground the US might claim in the Middle East.
I’m sorry, but it was doomed from the start. The only thing that held the 2 warring factions apart was a strong arm dictator. Once he was removed the fight was on. The only reason there was a temporary lull in the fighting was because Maliki’s side (with our help) ran the other side out of town for a while. There is no chance of peaceful coexistence between the Muslim factions. They hate each other maybe even more than they hate us.
This isn’t a chess board contest and if you think it is, you haven’t been paying attention the the chess board contest.
Bless his Marxist heart. That’s checkmate Zippy.
“Thats checkmate Zippy.”
LOL
Events are catching up to The Won.
And the media won’t be able to cover it all up for him like they have for the past 7 years.
Indeed. When did we fall down the rabbit hole? Some would say with Obama. I would say it was when Bush Sr. didn’t challenge the pony-tail guy and tell him to grow up, that government is not his daddy. It’s been all downhill since then.
Meaning Obama is going to make Syria into a proxy war between the United States and Russia.
Which it already is because we are supporting the side the Russians are attacking.
LOL, LOL, LOL, and what would Hillary have done? LOL. LOL, LOL!!! We are DOOMED!!!!
It will certainly be better than the treatment they've gotten from our NATO "ally" Turkey, that's for sure.
Obama has no freaking clue what the hell he is doing.
Putin is just doing what the four locals recruited for the U.S. special ISIS attack force were not, and could not do.
I can’t stand Putin and yes he is taking advantage of a U.S. prostrated by it’s own commander in chief. But at least Russians are likely proud their leader is a man of action, not a mere man of many words.
May God bless the Kurds, they begged for help and obama turned them down.
The Muslim world respects and follows the “strong horse.”
Right now, America is a seedy, wheezing old plug, awaiting the glue factory. Thanks to the homo-in-chief.
