Many people had the message of conservation even before they arrived at the nature center.
Laurel Harper brought her 4-year-old son, Christopher Harper-Mercer, from Torrance because she wanted him to appreciate nature.
``I want him to experience nature and feel close to it and feel responsible for it,’’ she said of Christopher, who carred a stuffed green frog in honor of the occasion. ``It starts young.’’
