Summary: U.S. Chief Data Scientist D.J. Patil shares why he's proud to see people across the country standing up for innovation and intellectual curiosity today.
Yesterday, a 14-year-old student named Ahmed Mohamed was arrested for bringing his engineering project (an electronic clock) to his high school. Officials mistook it for a bomb.
When I was growing up, my friends and I were fortunate to know how to use soldiering irons, circuit boards, and even a bit of duct tape when nothing else worked. We played, experimented, and learned through trial and error. The best part? When I brought my work in, my teachers loved it. And thanks to them it fed my desire to embrace science, engineering, and technology. That learning to play with technology and curiosity has helped me on every step of my journey so far.
Thats why Im so proud to see people across the country standing up for the innovation and intellectual curiosity that Ahmed has shown.
That includes the President:
(President's tweet)
And he's not the only one. Today, Dr. John Holdren -- the President's top science advisor -- reached out to Ahmed and personally invited him to come to join us at the White House Astronomy Night on October 19, where we'll bring together scientists, engineers, and visionaries from astronomy and the space industry, along with students and teachers. They'll share their experiences and spend an evening stargazing from the South Lawn.
We think Ahmed will fit right in.
That's because we think it's really important that kids with a passion for science and technology have the opportunities they need to reach for the stars (sometimes, that's literal).
It's why the President has prioritized broadening participation in science and technology to a more diverse pool of students.
It's why we host kids from across the country at the White House Science Fair.
Its why we believe that the National Maker Faire is so important, and why we are a nation of makers.
And it's why we're dedicated to telling the untold stories of some of the brightest minds in our country -- to inspire young people to follow in their footsteps.
Ahmed, you inspire us -- and we can't wait to meet you.
P.S. -- Dont forget your NASA shirt. Ill be wearing mine.

"Ahmed also met with representatives from Google, along with U.S. Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith from the White Houses Office of Science and Technology Policy (Smith is to Ahmeds right)" - From Twitchy
Seems like many companies and people want to be seen with Ahmed for self-promotion. It's like mutual self-promotion . And in all the photos you ever see of Ahmed with his family with others, no one is doing anything but smiling. His family acts like they believe they won a lottery.
Maybe Achmed’s sisters could perform a round of hearty ululations at the high point of the eclipse.
I read that pathetic excuse for a Dallas Morning News article earlier today. If the author could have painted the kid as any cuter or more misunderstood, I don’t know how. Hopefully readers are smart enough to see the truth.
Check out his clock making skillz!
The 17th century English had the proper management of social terrorism.
Yeah, he looks totally traumatized.
Gosh, this family must be laughing their heads off at all the western idiots. Fools and their money are soon parted. Hope MIT pays up when it’s time for Clock Boy to go to college! It will serve them right!!

Isn’t it the extra sidearm (pistol) carried by a foot soldier during hostilities?
I read that story myself and hope there’s a lot of follow-up attention given to it. The mainstream media jumped to their desired conclusion immediately, though, so they will keep their summary judgment unless some drastic evidence of something like a family plot emerges and criminal charges are filed. There will be almost no shaking them from the “targeted for being Muslim” storyline, if they can help it. This is another of those “teachable moment” “lessons” they will refer to again and again.
Imagine how successful zero’s friend and neighbor, Bernardine Dohrn, could have been if Clockmed had been there to build her trigger devices. (Any bets on Clockmed getting a private meeting with Ayers and the mrs. during his White Hut visit?)
I am gonna disassemble my VCR and put them into a milk crate and violla, i invented a video editor, give me white house tour and goodies from Microsoft!
Any other whiz kid can only dream of being traumatized in the same fashion as Clockmed has been for his fraudulent efforts. Just a peek at what Clockmed has suffered so far:
Obama misunderstood...he thought the kid made a BONG, and got all excited...
I hope they’re standing by Clockmed when his bomb goes off.

Obama. Rewarding bad behavior.
Thanks for the link, that was terrific.
