Asian-American and Muslim-American congressional leaders are asking Department of Justice Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate possible civil rights violations during the arrest of Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old Sudanese-American Muslim boy in Irving, Texas, who was arrested for bringing a clock that he had made to school.
"Profiling and mistreatment of an individual based on presumed or actual faith or ethnicity has no place in the world, let alone in the United States of America," Representative Mike Honda, who is leading the effort, told NBC News.
"Together, we must take a vocal stand against fear mongering and hate speech. No person should fear mistreatment or persecution simply for being who they are," Honda said. He was joined by Representatives Keith Ellison and Andre Carson, the two Muslim members of Congress, and other Asian-American leaders, including Representatives Judy Chu, Grace Meng, and Ted Lieu.
Twenty-nine members of Congress signed the letter to Lynch, which asserts that the youth's civil rights may have been violated several times per Texas Family Code Section 52.025. The code states: "a child may not be left unattended in a juvenile processing office and is entitled to be accompanied by the child's parent, guardian, or other custodian or by the child's attorney."

I’m not disputing that Ahmed should have been interrogated and the device disposed of but teachers and administrators were not doing everything in their power to protect the remaining students by allowing them to remain in place with a possible bomb in the building while police were called.

Ironically, they might not want to have been “overreacting,” particularly since the boy is Muslim.
We also don’t know how it all happened. Did the school consult the engineering teacher? It wouldn’t be surprising if when the device was discovered by the English teacher, Mohamed mentioned already showing it to the engineering teacher, or that he made it because he’s in engineering.
Lieu is new in Congress but spent his time in the CA Senate building a record of left-wing orthodoxy and Asian tribalism.
He was for racial quotas in CA colleges, and sponsored a bill to allow them again (they were supposedly stopped after a referendum years ago). I guess he thought only whites would be disadvantaged. When the Asian lobby objected, however, pointing out that Asians would lose big time, Lieu suddenly cared about fairness and tossed out his bill.
In campaign literature, he likes to play up his military cred with uniformed photos of when he was a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, USMC infantry, combat pilot USAF Reserve JAG lawyer.
When not signing ridiculous (and slanderous) letters, Lieu seems to spend most of his time beating the drum for illegal alien Amnesty.
Indeed it was. He didn’t get the reaction he had hoped from the first teacher to whom he showed it, who advised him to put it away and not show it to anyone else. So what does he do? He takes it out in English class, has it plugged in so the “alarm” will sound, which it does and raises the concern of the teacher. Obviously there are multiple reports out there, and one I heard was that he did not cooperate with the administration questioning as to why he brought it to school, and thus led to bringing in law enforcement. All a perfect-storm set up from the very beginning, and anyone would have to be blind and a dunce to think otherwise.

There are some possibilities that interest me about this case which I haven’t heard mentioned. Mohamed said that in his new high school teachers didn’t know “what he was capable of,” like his middle school teachers did. It’s said there he won some awards, but given how children are often given praise these days for any effort, it’s hard to say how much that means. He also is said to have repaired things around the house. That’s not exceptional as many children, particularly boys, have enough interest and skill in electronics to do that.
What I’m wondering is if Mohamed felt disrespected by the lack of stature and respect he suddenly had in the high school. Muslim males in particular feel “honor” is important to them, and that’s especially true around the time of adolescence, when they’re considered no longer children and are recognized to be “above” the women in their family, including their mothers.
So, add to this that the English teacher was female. It might be nothing, but Mohamed’s comments thus far seem to suggest that he had in mind bringing this device to show her.
Different officials including the police and mayor said he was uncooperative beyond repeating it was a clock and “passive-agressive.” Breitbart has reported that police are seeking an exemption from releasing the police report due to a possible lawsuit, but I haven’t been able to find more info on it anywhere else:

The Texas police department at the center of the Muslim-clock-inside-a-box controversy wants to bottle-up information that would help the public decide if Texas teachers and police were unfair to the Muslim boy who brought a suspected hoax-bomb to school — or if Texans were smeared as haters by progressives and President Barack Obama.
Department officials want to keep the information from the public because they’re facing a possible lawsuit by two lawyers working with the boy’s father and his political advisors at the jihad-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations, a source told Breitbart News.
The information could include details about the boy’s answers to police when they asked him if his bizarre and hazardous device was a hoax-bomb, rather than a uselessly dismantled clock, as he claimed.
Under normal circumstances, the police department releases information to the media no later than 10 days after a request for it. But the police department is asking Texas’ Attorney General for an exemption because of the expected lawsuit.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will decide whether to grant the exemption to the police department.
Some information is also being hidden by the parents of the boy, Ahmed Mohamed.
The school can’t release additional information because the Sudanese parents of the boy have not signed the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, either for the boy or his older sister, Lesley Weaver, a spokeswoman for the district told Breitbart.
