They traveled 13,000 miles in a Volkswagen bus through 13 countries and were only 30 miles from their destination, Philadelphia, when it broke down. Again.
By now, they were accustomed to the idiosyncrasies of their beloved bus. Still, after 194 days on the road and on the city's outskirts, they dealt with one more disappointment.
But again with the help of Good Samaritans, they got the bus going again and finally arrived this week in the City of Brotherly Love, the culmination of a journey of epic proportions. They had embarked on the long trip to spend time together as a family and to see the man who reinvigorated their faith, as he has for so many Catholics: the Pope.
Catire Walker, 41, his wife, Noel Zemborain, 39, and their four children ages 3 to 12 left their home in Buenos Aires back in March. They packed all they would need into a remodeled 1980 Volkswagen and began driving north.
They were not hippies, they insisted, but admitted they were a bit crazy to take on such an adventure. But for Catire and Noel, it was important to make this road trip. It afforded them the time they wanted to spend with one another.

Would have been easier to fly to Cuba wen the Pope was there, don’t you think?
LOL - I lived in one of those in Lake Tahoe during the winter of ‘82-’83.
Aaaaand, lemme guess, they aint leaving?
That is what I drove in High School, and it was a party wagon!
Spent many a night on the beach in Mexico in one too.
Not until they milk every ounce of publicity and get a new bus from VW.
This is becoming a joke.
Yes, I typically travel for 194 days at a time, too. Oh wait, I don’t, what with the pesky job, bills, responsibilities and all. Fortunately these folks seem to be fully untethered! /s
The Darién Gap is 160km by 50km of jungle in Southern Panama and Northern Columbia, filled with wasps, snakes, drug dealers and FARC guerrillas and, no roads! No way could a VW Microbus filled with a family cross this piece of land! Now, if they took a ferry from somewhere in Columbia to somewhere in Panama, that is possible but the article does not mention it.
Actually, the more I think about it, the less it becomes a 'scent of a little 'mierda de toro' and more of the odour of a huge, steaming pile of 'mierda de toro'!
Don’t forget welfare, housing and an EBT card.
One lady drove 800 miles from Florida with her six children to see Comrade Pope from afar ... I wonder if that was an excused absence for the children? So I would guess that this couple’s children didn’t need school or a family life when blessed with the opportunity to see Comrade Pope from afar.
It’s times like this I miss eleven long-haired Friends of Jesus In a chartreuse microbus. At least they were born here.....
Good point. Road trip, pilgrimage or whatever you want to call, they had a goal and they achieved it. It is very satisfying and memorable for their family. I just hope that, when the vacation’s over, they return to their home.
