ISIS Supporters: Syria Will Be A "Graveyard For Russians"

Islamic State supporters and Syrian rebel groups are spewing anti-Russia propaganda

By Gilad Shiloach and Vladi Vovcuk on Sep 21, 2015 at 11:39 AM

ISIS supporters and Syrian rebel groups are vowing to turn Syria into a “graveyard for Russians,” launching what collectively amounts to an anti-Russia propaganda campaign that in part is calling on fighters to prepare for war against the major world power.

Jaish al-Islam, a coalition of Islamist units battling the Syrian regime, is especially contributing to the online fight. It published a video to YouTube claiming that the group prepared explosives and mines to be used against Russian soldiers. Another video circulating allegedly shows Jaish al-Islam firing rockets on a Russian base in Latakia, a Syrian port city.

Verbal attacks targeting Russian soldiers are simmering across social media platforms. Posts from accounts affiliated with the Islamic State and Syrian rebel groups are threatening Russia with the hashtag “Syria is the graveyard of Russians and Shiites” (#سوريا_مقبرة_الروس_والمجوس). One ISIS forum also posted a “warning to ISIS soldiers,” saying “war between ISIS lions and the Iranian-Russian coalition is near.”

Other social media accounts, particularly those operated by Syrian rebel groups, shared photos and a video showing what they claim are Russian jets maneuvering in Syria’s skies, although the authenticity of the video could not be verified.

Syria’s foreign minister said last week his country was considering asking for Russian troops to join the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. On Monday, two U.S. officials told Reuters that Russia has started drone surveillance missions in the country. The drone operations seem to be based out of Latakia, where fighter jets, helicopter gunships and naval infantry forces have arrived in recent days, the officials told Reuters.

Sorry, ISIS. That scenario has only happened once.

To a group of American college hockey players in 1980.

I want them both to suffer catastrophic losses fighting each other. ISIS deservedly gets the headlines with its beheadings, etc. while Putin seizes Crimea and eastern Ukraine and threatens the Baltics and Poland in service of his dream of recreating Greater Russia.

By 1979, the USSR was run by old bureaucrats who didn't have much interest in winning the war in Afghanistan. They never really went all-in.

Putin sees a lot of upside to establishing a strong Middle East presence. Imagine the pressure he'll be able to put on Europe with energy supplies if he is working closely with Iran, once they have been freed of sanctions.

It's almost like the US has given them the rope on which to hang us.

The Russians will cut them down immediately. ISIS is going back home to Saudi Arabia, Paris, and Portland.

If Russia is smart, they will go for a quick and overwhelming victory. Do not give the terrorists time to learn how to kill Russians, and do not give them time to learn how to survive against Russian tanks and helicopters. Just hit them with artillery, missiles, shells, mortars, and lots of bombs anywhere they congregate in large enough numbers to be militarily significant. Leave ISIS so dispersed that Assad can take back his country, and then go home before the Russians can be targeted effectively.

I’m still talking about the shellacking the Russians took in Afghanistan, you see I’m still on the same subject.

Some say that is overstated.

The lost worst in the first Chechen war. They held their own in Afghanistan because the local Afghans did most of the fighting. They became the Northern Alliance after the Soviets left.

Russia's plan is to probably serve as the protector of the Alawites and Christians who live on the Syrian coast rather than fight to take over all of Syria. They will back Assad to do that but if that fails they have a pretty good defensible coastal position with a loyal population as a buffer.

If Assad falls Syria is dismembered into warlord factions and Russia controls the sweetest spot.

Why would you not root for the Russians over ISIS?

At least, as Sting put it, The Russians love their children, too.

How many in ISIS are Russian Nationals amid all of this bravado for Russia? Quite a few, actually. I hope the country stays safe. http://www.rferl.org/archive/under-the-black-flag/latest/17257/17257.html

Mostly Chechens who fled their country. ISIS' top military commander is a Chechen from Georgia - sadly trained by the USA as a special forces operator.

U.S. training helped mold top Islamic State military commander

Wait till the ‘fired US Military types’ form a brigade ala ‘Lafayette Escadrille’ or ‘Flying Tigers’ and help Russia..
