Let's Talk About Reagan For A Second (video)
WASHINGTON Comedian Stephen Colbert needled Sen. Ted Cruz about gay marriage and some inconvenient truths about his hero Ronald Reagan, in a late night TV exchange.
Guys, guys, however you feel, hes my guest so please dont boo him, Colbert said at one point, when Cruz was defending his opposition to same-sex marriage and a few hisses could be heard from the audience.
...
Live within our means, stop bankrupting our kids and grandkids, and follow the Constitution, Cruz said, summing up his platform.
And no gay marriage, Colbert interjected, setting off a back-and-forth in which Cruz repeatedly insisted that the Supreme Court should have left the definition of marriage to the states, in keeping with the 10th Amendment.
It doesnt mention marriage in the Constitution, Colbert said.
Thats exactly why its a question for the states, Cruz shot back, shortly before the hissing.
...
Cruz got roughly 10 minutes of airtime over two segments. Colbert asked how he would win over anyone who isnt especially conservative. Cruz invoked Reagan, saying his following among Reagan Democrats showed that the right principles can appeal across the spectrum.
Colbert pointed to two Reagan policies that likely would preclude him or anyone from winning the GOP nomination now: He raised taxes, and he enacted an amnesty for millions of people in the country illegally. If Cruz is so enamored of Reagan, would he embrace those policies?
No, of course not, Cruz said.
Colbert also tried to get Cruz to concede that compromise is valuable, and doesnt mean he capitulated to the Devil. He asked whether, as a strongly religious person, Cruz views his opponents as evil.
Theres nothing diabolical about you, Cruz said.

I don't agree on either count. Reagan was the first one to fall for Amnesty - the first time Lucy held the football and a conservative ran to kick it only to have the ball pulled away at the last moment. I don't blame an honest man for falling for liberal lies, at least not the first time it happened. Anyone who falls for it again is a dangerous fool (and, yes, I'm talking Rubio, Jeb, and the rest of the RINOs).
As for not trashing the socialists, I'm okay with Cruz emphasizing the positives and why a smaller, more conservative government would be good for jobs and good for everyone. It's the VP's job to trash the opposition, and I suspect Vice President Trump will do that very well.
I adored Ronald Reagan and herald him as probably the best president in my lifetime, although Eisenhower was good too. But, there are more than 2 mistake he made. There is a lot of information out there, so people should do their homework.
Leftists always bring up Reagan’s tax plans. What they don’t understand is that he broadened the tax base which grows revenue faster.
When Reagan tool office, both unemployment and inflation were high. The five pillars of Reagan's economic program were:
1)cutting tax rates for individuals and businesses.
2)cutting regulations
3)controlling welfare state government spending
4)increase defense government spending
5)controlling inflation by controlling the increase in the money supply
His program took effect on October 1, 1981, and was starting to work by May, 1982, which was 7 months rather than seven years for Hussein's plan.
You are delusional if you think Trump would ever be VP. It isn’t going to happen - as I don’t think Cruz is going to be the nominee either. I hope these are the last 2 standing because they are the best of the crop.
” know that name recognition is important, but it’s still letting the LibTard media play gate keeper. “
Exactly.
“It’s a no win situation, because on the one hand he’s a very serious opposition political operative set on making Ted look bad, on the other, he’s a Comedian. His insults are “jokes” and objecting to them makes you look thin skinned.”
Nailed it. A no win proposition for Cruz.
It surprised me that Cruz didn't bring that up, even more so because Colbert had set up the context of was Cruz willing to compromise on things. Cruz should've used that example from Reagan and said that's why we have to defend the border FIRST!! It makes me nervous, because Cruz hasn't yet renounced his support of even more H1B Visas, instead of filling US jobs with US citizens.
On gay marriage, Cruz took Colbert to school about anything not in the Constitution being a state issue.
Cruz's thing about what he said to his kids about running was contrived, because what he said is not the way you'd talk to children.
I thought Colbert gave a fair although adversarial interview. Cruz was given good opportunity to articulate his views. Cruz did a good job showing his humor and his knowledge of the Constitution, but I don't think he hit it out of the park.
JMHO
“Colbert also tried to get Cruz to concede that compromise is valuable,...
Yeah? When was the last time one of those demonrats compromised with a conservative? “
Perfect response, and unimpeachable to boot.
I don’t know why Sen Cruz would waste his time with that crowd. Anyone that thinks Colbert is even mildly amusing is not going to admit they are wrong about anything let alone core conservative prrinciples.
o yes it will be tonight, thanks for reminding me. O no doubt, he is blunt. Ted Cruz is a force but cordial; Donald on the other hand LOL what can one say about Donald? Donald is Donald LOL
he wasn’t booed over gay marriage- he was booed when he said “i’m for democracy”...
uh no....GWB did far more than “not trash” - he wouldn’t even confront! Totally different thing.
Reagan’s biggest mistake was nominating GHWBush as his vice president. That is like hiring a guy to erase everything you have done once you are gone.
If you say so.
Just curious - who are you wanting to vote for?
Why right thinking politicians give credence to these liberal bastards is beyond me, as they never gain any votes of that ilk.
“Just curious - who are you wanting to vote for?”
I haven’t decided, but I’ve been calling Cruz weak since the first time I saw his picture, some years ago.
What bothered me about that interview is that Cruz commented that he wouldnt trash his opponents nor Democrats.
This is what’s wrong with our party.
It’s not Ted’s job to trash his own party.
Maybe point out differences, but not trash them. When the time comes to take apart the Democrats, he will.
This is what I love about Ted. He’s got an IQ that out shines everyone on in the race and he knows how to use it.
Reagan CUT taxes. Liberals like Colbert know this, but they think if they just keep repeating that he raised them, it will make it so.
When Ronald Reagan took office, the top income tax rate was 70 percent (cut from 90 under JFK.) That got cut to 25 percent, then later bucked back up a point of two. The Social Security tax was also increased a good bit, but other taxes were also cut.
As a result, over 20 million new jobs were created and Federal revenues doubled in a decade.
Those are facts, Mr. Colbert.
