Candidate Ben Carson's Muslim comment: 1 more self-inflected dent in GOP's effort to widen appeal?

WASHINGTON – Anyone in America can grow up to be president, as the saying goes, unless you happen to be a Muslim, so a leading Republican presidential candidate believes, possibly one more self-inflicted dent in the party's professed commitment to broaden its appeal and promote tolerance.

"I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation," retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson said in an interview aired Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press." ''I absolutely would not agree with that."

For GOP leaders, the 2016 campaign offered a chance at redemption and fresh pitch to minorities, gays, women and others beyond the traditional core supporters.

After a blistering examination of the 2012 election, a report commissioned by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus concluded that "if our party is not welcoming and inclusive, young people and increasingly other voters will continue to tune us out."

But it hasn't unfolded according to the hierarchy's hoped-for script, with some high-profile candidates inviting lots of eyebrow-raising. Just in the past few days, their comments have underscored that the problems extend beyond the GOP's well-documented troubles appealing to Hispanics.

To be sure, candidates Jeb Bush and others have disavowed some of that rhetoric or tried to stake out more moderate positions. It can be tough, though, to avoid getting drowned out by language sure to stir up people.

Front-runner Donald Trump declined to correct a town hall participant who wrongly said President Barack Obama was a Muslim. Days later, Carson spoke about Muslims and the presidency — remarks described as "un-American," by a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Ibrahim Hooper. Hooper said the Constitution expressly bars religious tests for those seeking public office.

Finally a presidential candidate has said what all the others know but are afraid to come out and say. I'm pretty sure that Trump believes the same as Carson on that issue, but I think he may be trying to soft pedal his earlier remarks about a border fence, for now at least. If Carson doesn't cave to political correctness and stands firm on that statement I would probably support him over any of the other hopefuls except my main man Cruz. I like Trump's positions on most issues, but I think it's high time we had a real, honest to God Christian in the White House for a change.

I'm not saying that Trump's not a Christian, I'm not his judge, only God is. But OTOH it's hard for me to picture him worshiping a higher power than himself.

The “traditional core supporters” will save the nation.

3,000+ Americans were SLAUGHTERED on 9/11 because of Islam..people knew they were going to die that day and jumped off of the World Trade Center because they knew there was no hope, I still remember watching TV and seeing people fall out of the sky..HUMAN BEINGS falling out of the sky..you want to know the other image I remember..seeing CHILDREN in GAZA celebrating these American deaths, eating candy, seeing people dancing in the streets screaming with glee as Americans died in the streets of Manhattan..that is what I remember about Islam, that is when I learned what Islam was all about

He does have his flaws but he definitely has a set. If only he had been the first black president.

Any person who would become hysterically offended by Ben Carson's comment, or, for that matter, by Donald Trump's "failure" to repudiate the questioner who thought 0bama was a Muslim, would never vote for anybody other than a Democrat for President. Such a person would be utterly incapable of breaking out of the Marxist ideological constraints to which they have become a willing and devoted slave.

Most Americans are perfectly fine with an excess of caution regarding Muslims in power, especially since Ben Carson is absolutely correct about Islam being fundamentally incompatible with Liberty, Natural Rights, and the Constitution which is supposed to enshrine them.

Thus, there is no issue with respect to such things "hurting" the GOP's broadening appeal. That notion is simply a progressive Democrat wet dream and wishful thinking.

As Carson pointed out, a Muslim's religious beliefs would effectively "contraindicate" him/her wielding power in America, since they would be duty bound to bend such power towards the totalitarian goals which their perverted religion (Islam) openly espouses. Devout fundamentalist Muslims hate democratic process, Liberty, women's rights, free expression, tolerance, and any number of things which appear on the lengthy list of benefits which characterize America's free and open society.

I don’t know why candidates are bothering to discuss this. There’s nothing legally to prevent the voters from electing a Moslem (or, “what we have now”). End of discussion. What any of the present candidates thinks a good choice for the voters, on that issue, is irrelevant, since there is not presently a Moslem in the race.

Exactly - yet many here decided that Cruz isn't fit because he pointed out that, Constitutionally, there are no prohibitions against a Muslim President. With so many, so ignorant, even at FR, we may very well be doomed.

GO CRUZ!!! Keep it up Trump!!

For those wondering what to do with their spare cash:

Donate to Cruz

Donate to FR

What a farce.
