Cruz: Excluding Muslims from presidency is unconstituional

It would be unconstitutional to disqualify a Muslim from the presidency because of religion, Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Sunday.

“You know, the Constitution specifies there shall be no religious test for public office and I am a constitutionalist,” the Texas senator said during the taping of “Iowa Press” at Iowa Public Television.

Cruz was about Ben Carson’s televised statement that Islam is inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution. “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that,” Carson said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.

Cruz also referred to the ongoing controversy raised in the media over whether Donald Trump should have corrected a man who incorrectly stated at a rally that President Obama is a Muslim and not an American. “My view, listen. The president’s faith is between him and God. What I’m going to focus on is his public policy record,” Cruz said.

One area in which Cruz did not mind excluding Muslims, however, was from the ranks of refugees from Syria seeking asylum in the United States. He said they should settle in other Middle Eastern countries, citing concerns that some of the purported refugees may actually be terrorists.

“I think the Christians are a very different circumstance because Christians are being persecuted, they are being persecuted directly for their faith and the Obama administration has abandoned Middle East Christians,” Cruz said.

Several other Republican presidential candidates weighed in on the issue of Syrian refugees Saturday during a forum in Des Moines. Mike Huckabee agreed with Cruz that the U.S. should exclude Muslim refugees but accept Christians. Rick Santorum argued that even the Christians should be assisted in the region so they can return home when the violence ends.

Following his visit at Iowa Public Television, Cruz visited with restaurant-goers at the Machine Shed Restaurant in Urbandale for more light-hearted discussions while Iowans enjoyed their morning brunch.

Carson said he wouldn’t ADVOCATE for a Muslim president, not that one couldn’t run for President or, possibly, be elected.

As usual, this is a media-driven controversy — which is the oddest thing in the world to me because it places these oh-so-sophisticated liberals on the same side as a religion that tortures and kills gays, one of the most-favored classes of people. And the journo feminists — they despise the “patriarchy” but what could possibly be more patriarchal than Islam?? Women can’t drive cars, can’t vote, can’t talk to another man — and it’s not that they’ll be looked down upon but they could be tortured to death, publicly executed, maimed, etc.

Surely a spirit of delusion has come upon nearly all in our media. There’s no other explanation.

Et tu, Ted?
___

Right on! In fact, I’d be so “extreme” as to suggest that islam be labeled as a political terrorist organization and banned from operating in the United States.

And if a Muslim DID attempt to force sharia on America, it would be a one-term presidency.

You're funny, have you been paying attention the last 6 1/2 years?

Google "sharia law in America" and weep.

Yeah, I spent a bit of time with you Trump supporters on the other thread. You folks just about twisted yourselves to death trying to spin and excuse Trump’s pro-Muslim remarks. Not one of you would say you had a problem with him tapping a Muz for his cabinet or ticket.

So I’m pretty sure you resemble my last post.

So what. Cruz does not have to answer all dopey questions. Actually Cruz should have referred them to the US Constitution and not said a word more. Leave it a bit ambiguous for the reporter.

Well, Cruz was a top pick until just now.

This is the same as saying it wouldn’t be fair if Kim Jong Un couldn’t be president of South Korea.

Cruz finally shows his true colors.

I think SOMEHOW people might notice, like when they went to the store to buy bacon or ham or beer, and those things were no longer available. Do you think the public would stand for that?

Ahhh, that my FRiend is the moment you realize it is too late.

Remember the frog in the pot of water story?

We're at the tepid point.

I would suggest that it would be constitutional to disqualify a muslim from the presidency because a muslim would not be able to truthfully take the following oath or affirmation: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Deal breaker.

I doubt any leader can uphold and defend the Constitution, if he is wholly subservient to teachings of his Faith- i.e., abortion is the law of the land, that’s antithetical to most Faiths. The President can’t abolish it.

I assume that is why the Founders, all Christian, didn’t simple adopt the Bible as our Constitution.
